  1. Started by sgjava,

Java Periphery has finally been released! Java Periphery is a high performance library for GPIO, LED, PWM, SPI, I2C, MMIO and Serial peripheral I/O interface access in userspace Linux. This will replace User Space IO. I'm seeing GPIO write speeds of 500K/s from userspace. Compared to User Space IO and libgopid speeds of 2K/s. I switched from JNA wrapper generation to JNI wrapper generation. The build process is much simpler (only single install.sh) and building libgpiod is no longer required. The API follows c-periphery, python-periphery and lua-periphery. This should cover the widest array of SBCs and languages around. Java Periphery should work on Armbian/Ub…

  2. I came across these recently and found several interesting things within, so thought I would share them. I debated posting this in Development, but wanted anyone to be able to see and reply to the thread. Anyway some parts I felt were important enough that I actually took down some notes and quotations, which I will include. 3. I split this off to it's own topic, as it became more about Librem 5 which was offtopic from the original discussion. Being someone aware of Libreboot for some years now, I was never a fan of Purism and the BS they pulled with their laptops, which meant either: they knew fully libre firmware was not possible, and lied (or) they really wanted to do as stated, but ran face first into a wall due to lack of knowledge / research beforehand (about Intel IME issues) And so, back then I never really paid much attention to them, thinking (like you do) that they were just another company "cashing in" as you say, and everything from them is all …

  7. OK, playing around with NanoPi Duo (H2+) to see what kind of performance boost I can get using MMIO (/dev/mem) instead of gpiod (forget sysfs) and it was pretty impressive. I used pre-calculated offset to run a square wave (rapid on/off) on pin 203 IOG11 and I hit ~3.8 MHz compared to ~500 KHz using gpiod. You can take a peek at the source at https://github.com/sgjava/java-periphery/blob/master/src/main/java/com/codeferm/periphery/demo/MmioTest.java. So the idea is how to make this generic with boards with multiple GPIO chips and different register configurations. The cool thing is the underlying MMIO stuff is kernel cross platform. Any ways I've been thinking about this …

  11. Hi all, This is my first post after reading all the good work this community has done. My goal is to create a cheap cluster of ARM boards. I started with the RPI3 but that's getting expensive real quick and the board isn't that good performance wise. So I started looking for different, cheaper boards but it still wouldn't be cheap enough if you plan to run 30-40 of them. So I started looking at older Smartphones with OpenCL support and came to the Samsung Galaxy S4 (The Exynos version). It is an older phone but once was one of Samsungs flagships and still offers good performance for what I want. I know the Exynos 5410 was used on the Odroid XU, so in my opinio…

I only use Hardkernel images on my Odroids. On my NVIDIA Jetson Nano I of course use the image from NVIDIA since it's got all the goodies. But on all other boards I use Armbian. Either official Armbian, or Balbes Armbian. I wanted to hear your thought about this.

Hi We've made a patch for the current a64 megous 5.10 kernel which enables writing to the 2K SID/Efuse security area of the A64/R18 processor. Our initial investigations have found that the A64 doesn't seem to match the tables found in the SID Register Guide, however we've proceeded to perform various write tests and are presenting our results here for anyone that may found it useful in further development. There shouldn't be any issues using the same patch in the 5.14 kernel, as the driver code is still the same. The patch won't be pushed upstream, and is for dev purposes only, as the original intend of the driver is to be read-only. (This is EFUSE area …

I wonder how the community would react to an addition to the existing version of the images with XFCE DE , new version with Mate DE. Or other variants. The issue arose due to the fact that collecting different images and often get from users are requests for different options that vary from the norm in the community Armbian variant of DE (ICEWM KDE LXDE LXQT etc). I tried to add a test version with a Mate. Got to add the Assembly of images with alternative DE without prejudice to the basic variant (XFCE).

I am looking to replace 3 OrangePi boards with a H3 CPU with one board. Every board has a RTL-SDR USB stick attached to it, and the software tends to load up the CPU a lot on at least one core, in some cases the total load is high on 2 cores. To make it all easier / simpler I would like to replace the 3 with one board with enough processing power, but nothing extreme. The goal is that it will be in an enclosure up the antenna mast, POE fed, so not easily accessible! I even looked at the Atomic Pi, but I am not so sure about processing power in that unit.. (I might be wrong though!) Browsing the options online, I saw the NanoPi M4 which looks like a good candid…

What I would like to ask before I go down the rabbit hole is, based only on the specs below, if it looks possible? 60. One of the board members here wrote an article about a 12 node NanoPi-Fire3 cluster. I found it quite exciting (I don't get out much). It is a couple of years old. It seems to be very powerful yet energy efficient. Is this SBC still the King of clusters? I want to fool around with clusters, cluster software managers and process distributors, and perhaps do some coin mining (if that is feasible). Someone said this board has too little memory for coin mining, that 2gb would be better than 1gb. Pine have a 7 slot clusterboard which takes their PINE A64 (+) "Single Board Computer powered by Allwinner’…

  62. I was using OPI3 as my home automation server for many months, very stable for me with Armbian. But now I've migrated to more powerful machine and my OPI3 got nothing to do So I'm thinking about connecting it to my TV and use as light linux desktop: web browser mainly. Does anyone use OPI3 2GB RAM like that? Is it powerful enough to handle browsing with 10 tabs for example? Or I should go for some cheap RK3399+4GB RAM (under $50) instead? What's your experience?

I use NANOPI R1 in one of my projects. Now I need to develop a board to make a physical watchdog from NANOPI R1 itself and an RTC (the NANOPI R1 RTC does not work). I have two possibilities: One is to use the already integrated UART, or use a USB - I2C converter. Using the UART I would communicate the NANOPI with a 328P microcontroller, and from there I would collect the RTC information (with i2c between 328P and RTC), in addition to sending the frequent information to the 328P to keep the watchdog active. Using the I2C, the RTC would be connected to the I2C BUS and I would do the direct query via NANOPI R1, as well as send the frequent information via I2C …

  66. I have been bouncing ideas around with@diozerofor using MMIO in a generic way to achieve fast GPIO for times when performance (bit banging, software based PWM, low CPU latency, etc) is required. This is my first attempt using a NanoPi Duo (H2+) which should work on any H2+ or H3 based SBC. What I've done is write a register mapper, so I can extract the register masks without having to do it by hand from the datasheet. Hand mask making is tedious and error prone. The generic part will come in by externalizing the register offsets and masks. This will happen after I build my next project using an Odroid C2. Also, since the Duo didn't have PUDs, so I could not map those. Tha…

A lot of this stuff I already have ideas/"go-to"s, but I'd like some new ideas/recommendations. And I think it would help out others to know.

I just released a simple library for the MAX7219 LED matrix controller. It allows controlling any number of cascaded controllers in a very simple way. I tested it on an Orange Pi Lite. Even though it says it needs 5V, I ran the board @ 3.3v, it worked fine and didn't require any 3.3v->5v level converters. Here's the code: https://github.com/bitbank2/MAX7219 And a video of it in action: https://photos.app.goo.gl/iO66bsy6Wk13lT1y2

  69. Tinkering with API's is fun. Always wanted to allocate the scripts and tools made over time and allow quick access to the data they can provide. Never liked the idea of leaving a power hungry Desktop running to have access to it and am too paranoid to leave any SBC (FTP/WebServer) connected to the World Wild West for too long. As seen with the Mirai Botnet/DYN attacks. So my answer was to have something low power (SBC and armbian) that was at least 'secure enough' for me to let it interface with the world. So this was made: https://github.com/BiTinerary/PersonalAPI In a nutshell this is how it works: Scripts on an OPi Zero that make API calls, scrape web da…

At FOSDEM 2020, in roughly a few days (at 2pm, Sunday 2nd of Feb, Brussels time), there will be a livestreamed explanation given of the “FOSDEM Video Box” HDMI capturing devices. They use almost 60 of these ARM-based devices during the FOSDEM conference to capture both the video output of all presenters laptops, and the video and audio of the camera filming of the presenter. Serious video hackery accomplishes this. I would encourage anyone interested to check out the bio of Luc Verhaegen, one of the presenters.
