Hey, we made a tool that allows us to configure the wireless connection of a headless systems using just a smartphone. The reason was that we often ended up in situations where we prepared a headless system with our full stack (see https://nymea.io) and handed it over to someone else to just it in their WLAN. The target group are end users which are not able to use a console. In an attempt to return something to the community we've created a standalone tool for this to share it with others, BerryLan. At the moment it requires to add the nymeas debian repository and install nymea-networkmanager. You can find all the details about it on https://berrylan.app. I…

  3. Use case: simple NAS Boards to consider: anything with at least UASP, better yet, USB 3.0 or SATA. But stability (under heavy disk I/O and load average) matters over speed! Also, Gigabit Ethernet is a must. For all the SBC's which are listed as Supported, to what degree can I trust that I won't get kernel freezes, or filesystem errors, when disk I/O gets thick and furious? I completely understand if the disk I/O slows down to a crawl, as the load average gets high, but I'm wanting to feel assured that a board marked as Supported won't "flake out" on me, potentially destroying all my files, should I decide to use it for a simple NAS. Here is…

After working with sysfs and libgpiod as cross platform solutions I was wondering if there was a faster way using /dev/mem or mmio? I know this gets more bare metal and SBC specific, but for some things you may want absolute speed. https://opensource.com/life/16/4/bulldog-gpio-library for instance claims 1 MHz GPIO writes in Java. However it only supports 3 SBCs as you can see from https://github.com/SilverThings/bulldog. Is there a more generic way to do this and not lose performance? Using my generated JNA wrappers for libgpiod I get about 2K writes per second. In Python I think it's about 70K using libgpiod Python bindings. I realize you may not always need 1 MHz GPIO …

  58. I’ve been rocking a Solidrun clearfog base with Armbian for ~10 years now as my home router and was very happy with it until a few months ago when the newer software updates began to break it. I think the software support is beginning to rot due to not many users and thus no push to maintain it. I figure it’s time to start looking for a replacement. I have a Rock 5 ITX that could do it but I’ve been trying to keep it on the vendor kernel so it can transcode in hardware for Jellyfin - but that vendor kernel has issues reliably detecting the SATA controllers - and I don’t want to have to reboot my router multiple times to get the hardware to work after applying …

What is the most lightweight and cheapest board that would exist and could do that ? The orange pi zero with an extension board or a usb audio card would have been perfect, but I read several posts about the lack of software updates and the never resolved kernel issues. How bad is it really ? And then what else would do the job?

I'm also looking at NBD, because it is supposedly lower overhead than iSCSI. Is anyone currently using NBD on their SBC? I've heard NBD doesn't handle connectivity issues as well as iSCSI, so it's not wise to use for data you care about. However, providers such as Scaleway are using NBD as the rootfs for their ARM servers (not saying this is good or bad, just saying it). I am thinking specifically of having the SBC be the client, not the server. However anyone who can pr…

Often the online Banana PI/Lamobo PI diagrams can be confusing, and do not even try to guide yourself by Banana PI pinouts / photos of placement of hardware products/extensions. Runs on any CPU type, but has optimizations for ARM+X64. I wrote 100% of the code, so it might be behave differently than other game emulators. GB+GG are nearly perfect. NES is missing some popular mappers. The code is very optimized to begin with, but also uses a dirty-tile system to minimize the data sent to the SPI bus. This allows inexpensive SPI displays (e.g. ili9341) to run at or near 60 frames per second for many games even though the SPI bus can only do 30FPS of full screen updates. https://github.com/bitbank2/sg_fre…
