Armbian build framework

deprecated forums. READ ONLY

Note:

Topics regarding the build framework shall be discussed at Github

  1. I created a new image for my Odroid C2 with the most current version of Armbian 5.26. Configuration was pretty much standard, except BOOTSIZE=0 and ROOTFS_TYPE=ext4. The image works fine, if dumped to a sdcard. When dumping it to an emmc card, the system boots up, but 'find / > /dev/null' leads to a filesystem error: [ 52.799920] EXT4-fs error (device mmcblk0p1): htree_dirblock_to_tree:913: inode #41001: block 12032: comm find: bad entry in directory: rec_len % 4 != 0 - offset=0(0), inode=8213, rec_len=4097, name_len=0 [ 52.812862] EXT4-fs (mmcblk0p1): Remounting filesystem read-only Behavior is deterministic - I tried with two different boards and two diff…

This might be close to be off-topic, but I think this is the closest forum for this thread. Since I read that Igor asked if we know any build-farm services (clouds like Amazon's EC3 or the like), I've been thinking about private build farms. I imagine that Igor does not have a large build farm (perhaps some boards are contributing with distcc). Thomas, what is your setup for building Armbian ? (I imagine that you may have a stronger setup). Other developers, please chip in too. What's been in my mind for a while, is to make a low-cost farm, which would perform well and make things easier and quicker for the Armbian team. There…

A thought occurred to me while watching my machine sync a bunch of repos while running the Armbian build script, and I couldn't help wondering: Could we put the board support patches into their own repo separate from the build scripts themselves? More specifically: board support for "Boards of Interest" to the Armbian maintainers would be in whatever "official" repos we dedicate, I recommend separating per board family or SoC board support for CSC goes into, predictably, a CSC repo board support for EOL boards can be spun off into their own repo TV boxes go into a TV box repo Advantages: Supporting every pet …

  4. I am currently learning on the H5 on a OrangePiPC2. I would like to be able to add debug messages to arm-trusted-firmware (bl31) and u-boot code, then re-build them and update my SD card. I did successfully build an image, but having spent some time going through the build scripts and the documentation, and performed a number of recursive grep commands looking where bl31.bin was being referenced from, I have not been able to answer the following questions yet: 1) where is located the script code responsible for packaging bl31.bin and u-boot into an image acceptable by the H5 boot ROM ? 2) where is located the script code responsible for writin…

  5. I am building my own armbian image using the armbian build environment. A substantial part of the image creation time is occupied by over-and-over recompiling the kernel. Sure, it does go faster the 2nd time, but it still takes a lot of time. The goal for me is not to make a custom kernel. I am totally happy with the kernel. The goal for me is to modify the rest of the image. They installed software, config, etc. Is there a way to reuse an existing kernel for this, instead of rebuilding a new one each time? Cheers, Dolf.

  9. I'm successfully able to compile Armbian with the 4.17 kernel, Ubuntu Bionic and desktop support for my Orange Pi Plus 2E (H3). But I'm trying to switch from the default nodm display manager to lightdm. I was actually able to install lightdm using lib.config the customize-image.sh script (see here), but then the wizard complains that I have to choose between nodm and lightdm. Then I discovered there's a DISPLAY_MANAGER env variable that I can pass into compile which seems like a better solution. In order to make build system future proof and to cleanup the exception mess, which is virtually everywhere, I decided to start working on a part of the build system. Now the concept works and it is not that far to be mad if idea is bad packages/extras was moved into this, then board support package and (for now) Cubietruck and Tinkerboard hacks from config/sources/ All others have to be implement into packages and their scripts. 13. Hi, I tested to build some deb package yesterday on my Nanopi M1 and it went surprisingly good and quite fast so I wondered ... I know that the documented way of building armbian is with a x64 computer (with Virtualbox / docker). As I already stated I don't have a big enough x64 computer at hand, would it be feasible to tweak the scripts to build one image (not all) using either my Nanopi M1 (but I guess 512Mo of RAM will be problematic) or a Banana Pi / Raspberry Pi 2 ? If not, building uboot / kernel only ? I started to read the scripts, there are many scripts and but I think I can understand many of them individually even if the global architecture is h…

  14. I hope you can understand my question just from the title but here's more information in case you need it. BACKGROUND ON MY END GOAL IN CASE YOU HAVE ADVICE: I'm attempting to create a hardened linux image for running on my nanoPC-t4. I gotta give you guys props because Armbian appears to be wayyyyy ahead of the alternative distributions I checked out (gentoo/arch/lubuntu) in terms of support/customizability/documentation for ARM development. As a first step, I'm trying to build & boot a hardened Linux kernel. After some googling, I settled on this repo as my best option for free & open-source hardened kernel sources (unless anyone has a better suggestion)…

Release WIP and CSC images from their own page with very specific limitations, including, but not limited to: no kernel or u-boot updates, ideally with the kernel and u-boot package names modified with -unsupported- Explain these are demo snapshot images, potentially even package a different wallpaper that has -unofficial- or something similar watermarked across it. Maybe even use the default WM theme.

  17. I followed the documentation and cloned the repo in the Host first, changed to config/templates and started the Vagrant virtual machine. If I am not mistaken, inside the Guest, the repo is cloned again for the actual development. This implies that cloning on the Host system has only the purpose to provide config/templates/Vagrantfile and config-vagrant.conf, is that right? All other cloned files on the HOST have no relevance (except for the directories userpatches and output, which are mounted)? I find that quite confusing and if I am right with my assumption, I would like to add a note to the documentation for future users. Or: Would it be possib…

Now I have my dtbos and scr in place, added "overlays=" in armbianEnv.txt but my overlays are not loaded in run-time. Wondering if we should have a release notes/changelog that gets tossed into the image somewhere? Something very simple that we maintain by just updating a text file with a significant commit. (Like changing kernel versions, fixing a known bug from previous release, etc). Maybe toss it up onscreen at first boot. Moving the thermal zones on Tinker made me think that might be a good idea.

Many items are currently in Jira here https://armbian.atlassian.net/projects/AR/issues/?filter=allopenissues If you're a frequent contributor and would like to join our Jira, please PM me. It's not mandatory, but it would make things easier. To track. Let's try to prioritize things that help us deliver on that mission

It would be awesome if there is a way to provide an extra script that is run after the end of the armbian-first-run service. Maybe an additional parameter in armbian_first_run.txt that can provide the path to a script that gets run? Or is there a way I am overlooking that can achieve this already?

Today I did compile for some SBCs the kernel 5.9.1 dev but had something strange - for me - When I did compile for sunxi I also did get a .deb for sunxi64 and a new sunxi when I did compile for a sunxi64 board. Because in the past I did only get a new .deb-package for the platform which I did actually compile for.

Hi folks, I started to think about that a while ago and want to share my thoughts with you. In my opinion RPi-Monitor is a great tool to get a clue what's going on on a SBC (especially when testing stuff but also in 24/7 use). It's also lightweight enough to run all the time in the background collecting data and to be used by a few clients also (rendering/display happens in the user's browser and not on the SBC). Currently users have to install RPi-Monitor manually and sometimes seem to be confused (for example they switch between legacy and vanilla/mainline kernel and temperature/consumption graphs disappear). If we would integrate RPi-Monitor into Armbia…

I've been studying and working on Dynamic Device-Tree Overlays since awhile, but after hard work, I've finally got a working prototype using the work from Pantelis Antoniou. During last few days, I was doing debugging to find out why it wasn't working, even if I got the ConfigFS working, it was refusing to grab my simple overlay test. I've finally figured out this afternoon : the Root/Base DTB need also to be compiled with the "symbols" list generated with the Antoniou's version of "dtc". So, I will probably prepare a patch soon and submit it thru a PR.

  58. Using ./compile.sh, I'm not able to build ATF for the H5. It appears that the problem is that it's looking for the "allwinner-stable" branch, when the branch name on the repositiory is just "allwinner" or "allwinner-testing". Error is at the bottom of the post. I got it to work by changing the branch name in ./build/config/sources/sunxi64_common.inc by setting ATFBRANCH='branch:allwinner-stable' and it appears to work. Is this a naming problem in the fork of ATF, or a naming problem in armbian/build? Error output from ./compile.sh. Targeting nanopineoplus2, occurs on next/dev with jessie/stretch/ubuntu. If it's a help to Armbian, I'd like to configure a cloud-based build system that should be able to cut the "build all" time down to about 10% of what it is, and possibly to a number lower than that. Here's what I'd do. I'll use Google cloud's preemptible servers to spawn say 30 machines with the trigger being a pull request. If any of these macines dies during the build, it'll come back red. and otherwise, it will come back green and upload all of the binaries to google clou…

  61. Hey, I'd like to build an image closer to mainline Debian (normal MOTD, wicd instead of network manager) with a few extra packages (nginx, mariadb, ...) and openbox for the DE targeted at an OrangePi Plus 2E, any suggestions or guidance on how to edit the build scripts to create something like this? Currently doing this all with Ansible after copying it to eMMC, but I figure it'd be a big time savings to prebuild an image with the right DE and software on a more powerful box.

But nand-sata-install is still there, people might want to use it and will fail (though I think that will most probably never happen since once people are h…

  65. Hi, attached is a patch for U-Boot (should work on 2016.09-rc1 and 2016-09-rc2-dirty, will probably work on older ones as well) that makes it use the plain text file uEnv.txt instead of boot.scr, which has to be translated to a binary file first. This way changing the environment means only editing a text file, instead of editing a file, converting it to binary, and copying it over to the /boot partition on the SD. This becomes active if the U-Boot config has the option OLD_SUNXI_COMPAT disabled (in the menuconfig this is under ARM architecture -> Enable workarounds for booting old kernels). It also adds a small patch to board/sunxi/board.c to skip the setting …

I think it's time to rename them and provide clear definitions of what they are supposed to provide. I'll start with some ideas here: Vendor This Kernel is currently called Default . This allows wider testing for those who like to build experimental things Makes the creator of the branch responsible for keeping it up to date gets flattened out and merged into "master" or a "next" waiting for a revision bump PR's should be used on anything anyone is not 100% certain of to g…
