Hi Armbians :) Armbian's discontinued support of the NanoPi Neo3 board, hit me very hard. I have operated multiple of these SBCs with Armbian very stable, in different DCs for a long time. Because of the defunctional kernel under Armbian, I was forced to look around for alternatives and only came across Manjaro, DietPi and Friendlyarm published by FriendlyElec themself. Unfortunately I was not happy with Manjaro and Friendlyarm. Dietpi, on the other hand, seems to be doing quite well till now. And most importantly, it doesn't seem to have the kernel/ reboot problem that affected Armbian. But how can that be if it's based on Armbi…

The binaries supplied with the ArmBian release for the Rock Pi 4 work great. However, when I try to build my own from Mainline sources, I see lots of booting issues. Do you use Rockchip provided binaries, or are they built from scratch? Any help would be gratefully received.

I accidentally ripped off a capacitor from the back of the Helios64. This missing capacitor is right below the SATA connector. I searched for the schematic of the board without any success. Does anyone happen to know the value and size of this capacitor?

Hello, I received recently an Helios64 from a new friend, However, when I get home, I plug it in, turn it on (already I have to press the power button for 4 seconds to get some life) and I get the following LEDs lit up: - LED1 - LED2 - LED3 - LED5 - LED6 i got nothing on the serial line (tested on MacOS and Windows), and no reaction when I do quick and long press on Recovery nor Reset. Is there some electronic schematic that could help me to debug hardware or procedure to get JTAG access to the RK3399 ? Regards,

@Contributor/Maintainer AR-1172 - fix complete 08 May 2022 There is was a bug in the 5.15, 5.16 and 5.17 kernel r8152 driver that affected RTL8153b Gigabit USB Ethernet (LAN0) on the Orange Pi R1plus LTS and other boards. The bug only presents on high load and I can trigger it reliably with bidirectional high load on Orange Pi R1plus LTS. The bug kills the RX interface and it requires power down to reset. I assume that it also affects the Orange Pi R1plus, and there are reports of it affecting NanoPi R2S. I would assume that other boards could be impacted. My proposed fix is to revert the driver back to the version used in 5.10 kernel (and to disa…

Hello, My NAS becomes unresponsive every time I run a somewhat CPU-intensive task: indexing photos in photoprism, importing followings in Mastodon… or just browsing Mastodon. Is it expected of the Rockchip RK3399 or can I improve the situation with the right CPUfreq config ? For context, here is my CPUfreq config and kernel (I have yet to update): axel@helios64:~$ cat /etc/default/cpufrequtils ENABLE="true" GOVERNOR=performance MAX_SPEED=1200000 MIN_SPEED=1200000 axel@helios64:~$ uname -a Linux helios64 5.10.21-rockchip64 #21.02.3 SMP PREEMPT Mon Mar 8 01:05:08 UTC 2021 aarch64 GNU/Linux Thanks!

My NanoPi M4V2 wont boot. It has a solid red light no green at all. I cant access it with SSH. I went through the troubleshooting checklist available for the NanoPi in regards to the red light. Nothing was solved. I tried different SD cards with different types of images and different types of burners. Nothing works. I know that the SD cards, images, and burners are not the problem cuz I tested it on a Raspberry Pi with no problems.

I'm sick of having to play reset-it-until-it-boots-then-it-reboots-later game, anyone know a similar motherboard I can use in place of the helios64 with minimal extra messing around? I totally understand that the front and back panel will be a problem to set up, I just don't want to have to hack the main case part, and have support for the five SATA ports.

Hi there, now I have pure bug report: done apt update + apt ugprade, GUI frozen, even no SSH, about an hour later (I was outside my house) (probably) restarted but up to multiuser, no GUI at all. Howeve I CAN log over SSH, sthe issue "startx", but ONLY as ROOT. (much indesired, as ex web browser should never be started as root). I can enable remote X in /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc , then start remote X session. Also "init 5" attempts to start X, but crashes. How to diagnose and repair? Laurent

Dear all; I'm looking for some help with my Helios64 NAS, since I update kernel to 5.15, zfs-dkms won't work. Which is normal, since the most recent version available for Helios64 of zfs-dkms is 2.0.3-1~bpo10+1 (tested on 1st April 2022), and this version is only compatible with kernel from 3.10 to 5.10. Then the first solution that I thought was to downgrade to 5.10 through the armbian-config tool, however when I'm trying to install the linux-headears (through armbian-config) I'm having the herdears of 5.15 (same issue with apt install linux-headers-current-rockchip64) while zfs-dkms looking for 5.10. Preparing to unpack .../zfs-dkms_2.0.3-1~bpo10+1_all.deb .…

Hey guys, I figured it was time to ask again... Does doing an `apt full-upgrade` from Buster to Bullseye break anything like before a year ago? I kind of want to do it, but not if the eMMC issues are still around. I really prefer not using the slower SD card method. And i also want to ask about stability for people that still use a Kobol with Armbian on Bullseye. Any pertinent issues with anything? A few people on here have claimed that they have gotten the vanilla Debian kernel to run on the Helios64, but I'm not sure how... Sure would be great if the vanilla Debian distro worked on this board, but I doubt that'll ever happen... I love…

Not sure if this is the place for this since it isn't really a software issue, but... So I decided to take apart my Helios64 to apply the 2.5Gb/1Gb Ethernet fix and things went badly. I ended up accidentally destroying the 402 caps on one of the SATA ports by scrapping the board against the standoffs as I was pulling it out of the case. As far as I can tell, they should be part of the SATA standard, 10nF DC blocking caps, so I have a rough idea of what they might have been but I don't know for sure since they are simply gone. Does anyone happen to know what those caps were or have access to a circuit diagram or BOM I could referenc…

Hello, I have been holding onto kernel 5.10 (5.10.21-rockchip64 to be exact) for a while as it has been pretty stable for me and also because I heard bad feedback from newer kernels on the Helios 64. But with the recent discovery of the DirtyPipe exploit (which has been introduced in Linux 5.8), I might be looking to upgrade to the latest Armbian kernel (which contains a fix to the vulnerability). So, my question to fellow Helios64 users is: have you encountered any issue with kernel 5.15, especially when using OpenMediaVault 5, Docker, MergerFS and NFS?

I have a recovery issue. I have successfully flashed an image on to my RK3399 SOM, but I made a mistake on the USB, so am trying to correct the error, but I have no USB communication when I boot into recovery mode. When I boot into recovery mode, it reports: "'recovery' does not seem to be a partition nor an address Unable to boot:recovery". It also tries to find a backup partition: "'backup' does not seem to be a partition nor an address Unable to boot:backup" then suggests I start rockusb: "try to start rockusb", but I have no USB. I have tried with several different computers and USB cables, but there is no USB! I assume that the boot file for recovery mode are no…

Hello, I had a NanoPi M4v2 running 5.10.63 (buster) for a while without issue. Both I2C and SPI were working perfectly fine and the system was stable. Today apt updated the kernel to 5.15.25 and it broke multiple things, the first issue was that the network wasn't working properly, yellow light but not green one / no IP requested from the local DHCP server. The overlays on this system were: overlays=dwc3-0-host i2c7 i2c8 spi-spidev overlays=dwc3-0-host i2c7 i2c8 spi-spidev I connected the eMMC moule to a card reader and removed the overlays one by one and found out that `i2c8` was breaking my boot / network: overl…

Hi, since latest upgrade to new kernel 22.02 stable the system becomes unstable. There are issues writing to mmc2 and "EXT4-fs (mmcblk2p1): Remounting filesystem read-only". This does not allow most of the apps to work properly (e.g. openmediavault stops working) I tried to switch back to previous kernel version through armbian-config but that does not work too Pls help. Using P14 in the documentation (https://wiki.kobol.io/helios64/usb/#serial-console) I am unable to get a serial connection to work. Has anyone been able to get UART2 debug Serial working using P14 and an FT232 USB cable? With Kobol plug pulled looking to just have this run in DAS mode over USB-C to still get use without fear but still need to maintain serial console to monitor booting as it sometimes locks up on boot. Downclocking to 1Ghz or below conservative seems to do a lot better but still looking to have remote debug console. When I try to connect I just get the follow error and no output. pl2303_get_line_request - failed: -32

I loaded both the Raxda Debian OS and the Armbian OS on the Rock Pi 4A+ (4GB RAM / 32GB eMMC) integrated eMMC chip and both boot fine. I then ran the Phoronix pts/scikit-learn benchmark and got a big discrepancy in performance: https://openbenchmarking.org/result/2112285-NE-2112281NE08 The Raxda Debian OS (noted as rockpi4a+raxdadebian in the benchmark) performs basically the same as the Rock Pi 4A version (noted as rockpi4-rk3399 running Armbian), as expected. The Armbian OS (tested multiple times as rockpi4a-emmc, rockpi4a+, rockpi4a+governor, and rockpi4a+armbian) all perform terribly. Thoughts?

Hi! I am trying the vanilla 5.15 kernel which has support for helios64. The system is booting, disks, MMC and network are working. But fancontrol fails. It seems the /sys entries have changed and the udev rules are not working. I've tried to understand the wiki page in order to adapt the udev rules and fancontrol config file but I am a little bit lost. Is there updated versions of those config files? Kind regards, Xavier Miller.

Hi together, iam realy desperate and hope someone can help me with my problem. I think something crashed while I disconnected the USB-Cable in U-Boot Mode with helios64. Now Iam not able to see my m.2 SATA SSD in U-Boot Mode as USB Storage in my PC. I use the U-Boot mode from a SD-Card with a boot image. When I start some armbian System from SD-Card the m.2 SSD is visible and ready to use. I dont know what kind of logs do you need for my Problem. Sorry for that. :-( The only thing I want to do is to use my SATA m.2 SSD as armbian system drive with OpenMediaVault again. best regards sommer11 Infos to my device: https:…

Hi! I'm having trouble with hdmi display and armbian focal on rock64. All works with simple office hdmi displays but fails with an open frame display connected using hdmi->dvi cable. I know that not all features of legacy vendor kernels can be supported in mainline kernels. However, has anyone considered and/or attempted to get the OTG capability working in a current/mainline kernel? I have a couple different projects where I need to have OTG working so I can have the RockPi 4 be a USB device (e.g. mass storage, ethernet, etc.). For the time being this means I can only use the legacy kernels, but I am hoping that might change in the future. There are a number of different RK3399 boards with DWC3 controllers that could benefit from such a feature being available, right? Since I don't understand the kernel/driver/platform glue…

Kia ora. I am aware that the external USB ports on the Helios are able to deliver up to 900mA per port. I am wondering whether it is possible to find a power source inside the Helios64 that would be able to deliver, say, 2.5A at 5v? Maybe somewhere quite soon after the 12v power in...? 🤔 Jon

Hi there, i'm trying to getting Armbian working on my RockPi 4B. Installation and everything went fine. Even my Intel 660 2TB NVMe SSD was detected as I booted the SD card Image (created with Etcher). But as I booted the image from eMMC (flashed the image via dd if=image.img of=/dev/mmcblk1); it booted fine so far, but it doesn't detect the NVMe SSD... Hi folks, I am puzzled. When I am away for a few days I usually shut down my nas. It does indeed shut down but over night comes up again. Now I would like to know what triggers that unwanted restart here... I am currently on 21.08.3 Buster with Linux rockchip64 5.10.63 and do have OMV running... I could unplug the battery next time but I'd rather solve the issue the correct way. It's strange to me because I did not change any system parameters in OMV or via SSH. I do believe that an update to the latest kernel did mess things up. Where do I have to have a look?

Hello all, I have a question today regarding ARMBIAN - Linux and the configuration of the ZRAM .... Under the ARMBIAN for RockPI 4 I have a ZRAM for the SWAP and a ZRAM for /var/log. Is it possible that I change this configuration and use the eMMC memory for these two areas? Because the big problem with /var/log is that it is simply too small and thus constantly runs into "ERROR" -> volume full. Thank you very much and I am looking forward to constructive contributions to solve my problem. Kind regards

Hello all, I have a RockPi 4B in use and wanted to connect my 7" display from Raspberry via the display port. According to these instructions, it should also work. https://wiki.radxa.com/Rockpi4/hardware/display#Raspberry_Pi_7_inch_Touch_Display But unfortunately I can't find this file under "boot" because I'm using an ARMBIAN image. How can I address this 7" display? Can anyone help me here? Best regards from Berlin Z. Matthias

Hi folks, I am wondering if somebody with a mac enviroment has a decent / performant samba connectivity? After I upgraded to Big Sur I have severe issues with the samba protocol when accessing my shares on the helios running openmediavault. I know that Apple had made some changes with samba but there might be some users that dug a little bit deeper and could give me a hint. I did try it with different settings in the extra options over the past weeks but with no luck so far. Sidenote: Also NFS is terribly slow and laggy. I am back with AFP connection now that does the job perfectly and fast.

Hello, target : nanopi R4S/4Gb I downloaded the last image from the armbian site for the friendlyelec nanopi RS4. I flashed an A1 SD card of 32GB. I only see one partition (after a 17MB offset). Hello I need to change a drive in the Helios64, and so I bought a new WD 2TB drive. Using a WD My Book 111D USB enclosure, I have partitioned, formatted and copied the data from the old drive. But when I change the drives to put the new one in the Helios64, the drive appears unformatted. See below. I can't understand what's happening, when I plug it back through USB everything is back to normal. Does the partitioning through USB differ somehow??? It appears as if the partition table "stays in the USB enclosure", which doesn't make sense for me. Is there something to try? Do I have to start again the process in the NAS enclosure? I…

Hi guys, I have been using my Helios64 for more than a year now. I have it connected with the 1Gbps NIC. I have been reading about network bonding and getting both NICs up and running. The main purpose would be to have it running in mode "Adaptive Transmit Load Balancing" (mode 5). First I've discovered the issue with the 2.5Gbps not being able to keep a consistent (and performant) speed. So I've soldered the missing pin from the capacitor to the NIC (more on this later). I've checked the speed and now it is up to specs, getting very close to 1000Mbps (960-980Mbps). But here it comes the problem that I'm facing, if I enable both independently …

Device is in pristine condition, standard fans were swapped for Noctua NF-A8. (standard fans will be included) I'd prefer to keep this EU only as shipping is going to be a pain.

Edit: This is a duplicate already reported and a pull request in place. mods please delete The solution is to revert a patch related to power management. Symptoms are that ethernet link comes up, but no ip, dhcp, cannot assign ip address. the following patch resolves the issue on my system. I did not raise this in bug tracker since its not allowed to put things in there that are not supported. Unsure what else to do with info, hopefully it will help someone else. Hello, I am working with "Armbian_21.08.1_Nanopineo4_focal_current_5.10.60" on a nanopi Neo4. During the initial boot, the (HDMI) monitor shortly displayed some text (went to fast to read) and then went blank and the monitor turned off. However, output came through the serial debug port (USB2) and I was able to complete the initial setup. Now, I can now connect with SSH, but it would be nice to be able to work directly. How can I redirect the output to the HDMI monitor? Cheers, John

Hello everyone, I’m starting this message by apologizing for my poor English (I am French) and also by informing you that I am a newbie with Linux. I have a big problem with my NAS Helios64. At first, I thought this problem was caused by OMV. So I went to the OMV forum to explain my situation. I created the following topic: https://forum.openmediavault.org/index.php?thread/40252-many-problems-after-an-update/&pageNo=1 . There, a kind moderator (macom) asked me to enter some instructions to try to pinpoint the root of the problem. After giving him some outputs, he told me: "For me it looks like your SD card is dead." My i…

After shelving my Rock 64 I dusted it off and downloaded the latest desktop image with Ubuntu Focal. The latest OS has video artifacts that the older OS did not. I can only describe the issue as "scan lines," but they are random black bars that appear through out the entire screen (as if WiFi is interrupting the signal only there's no WiFi on the device). I would like to know the best way to bisect the issue as I'm fully capable of cloning the repo, building the image, loading the image and testing it out but if there are pointers to simplify the process I'd love to hear. Hoping to give back since this is a community supported board. Thanks.

Hey, I have uninstalled cron from my system completely, but I just thought I might help contribute, even just a little, by making some services and timer files to replace the ones in these folders: /etc/cron.d /etc/cron.daily /etc/cron.hourly /etc/cron.weekly Now keep in mind that I have not fully tested any of these yet! I would appreciate feedback in testing these, since most of these I won't even use on my system. I barely even use the armbian-config utility at all, so... yeah... The files in question are these. Hello. So, really sorry to hear that Team Kobol are disbanding. Many thanks to all who worked so hard to put the Helios64 together. I am really pleased with my Helios64, and am grateful for being able to get hold of one of these. Thank you! 🙏 What with one thing an another, I never got hold of a UPS battery; the battery couldn't be shipped with the original shipment, due to restrictions on shipping Li-Ion batteries; and then the additional postage costs for sending the battery seperately were prohibitive for Team Kobol, which I completely understand, so I chose not to pay the extra for the battery. However, it would be really useful for me to build…

Hi, I have bricked my system by installing the rk3399 legacy multmedia framework. It was installed on emmc. I was able to recover my system by using the P11 jumper to skip the boot on emmc, as explained in the doc, and now my system runs on a SDCard. The problem is, it seems that I cannot access the EMMC anymore -- it does not show up /dev. My intuition is that the P11 jumper disables the EMMC altogether. Am I write and if so, how can I access the EMMC again? I would like to be able to read it again (I had important data, notably unison synchronization files) and reinstall a fresh OS on it. Any help would be welcome!

Last week I updated the Armbian on my NanoPi M4V2 to the latest version (Armbian 21.08.1 Buster with Linux 5.10.60-rockchip64) and started noticing some issues with my Zigbee2MQTT local install. With the help of the Zigbee2MQTT main developer, we managed to confirm that the issue was reproducible on 5.10.60, but everything was working fine on previous kernels like 5.4. Other users not on Armbian (Raspbian) also confirmed that they were experiencing this problem with the latest kernel but was working fine on previous versions. We realized a bug was introduced for the CH341 driver in 5.10.60, that seems to have been fixed now on 5.10.62. …

This happened out of the blue, without indication of anything else being wrong. I just noticed that NFS stalled, and realized that the server is not on the network. I have a strange problem with my R2S. I grabbed latest buster and focal images, burned them using Balena Etcher onto a pair of 32GB SanDisk Extreme Cards and neither is booting. Serial console shows that boot process gives up waiting for root file system and drops me into initramfs shell. Looking into /dev, I see no mmcblk0 device (or any other block device apart from loops). If I now eject and re-insert the card, the device shows up. If I do it during boot process, while the board is still waiting for rootfs, boot process continues correctly. Reboots are fine, but if I unplug the board for longer than a second it's back to initramfs for me. …

I understand that this problem is not related to armbian. I tries asking NexDock but they don't know how to make it. So, I just wonder anybody knows how to let armbian on Rock PI4B work with NexDock 360's keyboard ? I know when using Raspberry PI, I can add a line dtoverlay=dwc2,dr_mode=host to /boot/config.txt. But when using armbian, there is no config.txt in /boot. Thanks.

I finally assembled my Helios 64 today. Went well, just took a while. I'm reading the Kobol Wiki page for installing the OS on the internal EMMC and am a bit confused. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I usually boot a SBC the first time from an SD card to do some testing. Then I'll use Armbian config to install the OS onto the EMMC when I am ready. The Kobol Wiki talks about first installing uboot from an SD card. Is that actually needed? Also, do I really need to set up a serial terminal session? I usually just SSH into the box (I know find the IP address via my DHCP server) and configure everything from there.

Hi, sorry, prop. a stupid question - but I was so far not figuring out the answer. I have a helios64 running - pretty standard installation, including openmediavault and docker, as described on the kobol help page. I realized that there are some firewall/iptables rules are set, as example: tester@helios64:/etc# sudo iptables -L Chain INPUT (policy DROP) target prot opt source destination ACCEPT all -- anywhere anywhere ctstate RELATED,ESTABLISHED ACCEPT icmp -- anywhere anywhere state NEW,RELATED,ESTABLISHED ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp d…

I checked for any available updates yesterday, and this (linux-u-boot-helios64-current 21.08.1) was applied. Can't find what was new or if it was only a version bump. By the way, nothing broke after the update.

Hi all, been trying to sort out a stability problem with what was a rock solid helios64, i moved from running armbian on the eMMC to a 256GB sandisk extreme SD card due to plex continually filling it up. currently running Armbian 21.05.6 Buster with Linux 5.10.43-rockchip64, running OMV, Plex and ZFS not much more it appears this is where things go pear shaped: Spoiler [ 6636.457621] ata1.00: exception Emask 0x2 SAct 0x3800000 SErr 0x1000400 action 0x6 [ 6636.458306] ata1.00: irq_stat 0x08000000 [ 6636.458659] ata1: SError: { Proto TrStaTrns } [ 6636.459051] ata1.00: failed command: READ FP…

I have a M4V2, and want to build a mini NAS with OpenMediaVault 5 under Armbian (OMV5 can only run under Armbiam/Debian, but not in Ubuntu) The M4V2 has a SATA hat, and it can support up to 4 hard drives (2.5 inches size), so the SATA hat is powered separately, and I guess this is why this hat always gets overheat. There is a 12V fan interface (2pin) on this SATA hat, just right biside the power button. And I found that there are already some solution in this forum, all kinds of scripts, can drive the Fan according to the CPU's temperature, or even SSD/HDD's temperature, this are so amazing. And then when I tried these scr…

Hello to everybody ! I'm new to this forum and to linux. After installing my Helios64 recently, I had a few problems and had to go with the eMMC maskrom installation which were fine. PS : I've installed on top of the linux kernel (4.4) Open Media Vault (latest version). After installing everything, I've noticed that the fans were not functioning. I've checked the documentation on kobol.io site and went to the /etc/fancontrol config file and set the values as it was shown on the doc. I've restarted the fancontrol service, but still nothing. I've tried to read the pwm of my fans (has fan P7 were linked to the hwmon0 : cat /sys/class/…

cancelled - power unit cable was not correctly plugged in and NAS was running on battery, hence the automated shutdowns, i think (but it's not clearly printed / displayed anywhere, i would say that it could have helped).

NAS was on during the night and this morning : no more RAID5 (with 5 WD HDD). After reboot, i see that two disks are missing : ``` [Sun Jul 18 11:49:11 2021] ata1: illegal qc_active transition (00000000->00000001) [Sun Jul 18 11:49:14 2021] ata2: softreset failed (device not ready) [Sun Jul 18 11:49:23 2021] ata1: illegal qc_active transition (00000000->00000001) [Sun Jul 18 11:49:24 2021] ata2: softreset failed (device not ready) [Sun Jul 18 11:49:38 2021] ata1: illegal qc_active transition (00000000->00000001) [Sun Jul 18 11:49:38 2021] ata1.00: failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x40) [Sun Jul 18 11:49:56 2021] ata2: illegal qc…

I'm having a very weird issue. I've encrypted a 5TB USB drive on my computer with LUKS sudo cryptsetup luksFormat /dev/sda1 And it works great on my computer. But when I plug in into my Helios64 and try to use it: sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda1 secret Enter passphrase for /dev/sda1: No key available with this passphrase. It just refuses. And if I try to encrypt the drive from the Helios64 using cryptsetup it never finishes, the command runs forever. Anyone had similar issues? Any ideas?
