The only thing I've had issues with on armbian, and that I often have issues with, is the default log2ram. As soon as you start doing anything that actually logs stuff, like access logs, or container logs and so on, the log space is not enough, even if allocating 500 MB RAM. And when /var/log fills up there are going to be crashes... in all kinds of ways. I have an ansible script that disables this now, but sometimes when doing dist-upgrade, log2ram settings come back (and also zram swap, which is also bad because kubernetes does not like swap, but thats not a disaster at least). So I simply propose to not make log2ram default, unless it can have some way to "…

  3. From Armbian 20.08 onwards, I observed that htop loses its settings (e.g. show userland threads, process sort order) every boot. This is equally odd and frustrating, and until recently I had no idea what was happening to make this so. Then I discovered the cause - this script: /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/80-update-htop-and-offload-tx And indeed, on every reboot, it overwrites htoprc with some default settings. And I have tried but not succeeded to understand the intention was behind a decision to not allow users on SBCs to persistently change .htoprc any more. Can anyone add any context? Struggling to see how this makes…

Hello all, I just wanted to ask is there any consideration to support Radxa Rock (Standard/Pro) in any form. It is/was a Rk3188 based board with 2GB RAM and 8GB of flash. I'm using it as a VPN server with Debian 8 and it proved very reliable in all departments over the years. It was quite powerful for its time and I think it could prove to be very useful since it can be left to run without any active cooling or anything. I'm putting it here for consideration since I guess supporting RK3188 won't create any substantial workload, and it can do a lot even for today's standards. I have two of the devices and can use one of them for testing if required.…

  6. Hi All, I would like to use the new RaspberryPI Camera ( IMX477 ) with armbian (with TinkerBoard S) and I was wondering if this is on the roadmap for development? I'm looking to test this ehci debug port kernel module on a sunxi board that supports USB gadget, but it turns out it's not enabled in armbian by default. While I can recompile the kernel right now, I think it's useful to enable it as a module as this driver is quite small. Thanks. https://github.com/armbian/build/blob/master/config/kernel/linux-sunxi-current.config

  9. There are a lot of the new wider monitors coming out. I have had one for several months. None of my Armbian boards support it. Some won't display at all, some default to a single lower resolution, and several will only allow to set to 1920x1080. Doesn't HDMI interrogate to discover resolutions and then match capabilities? I have no clue how HDMI actually works but it would be great if Armbian looked proportional on those monitors ;] Thanks

Hi guys. I would like at least 2 audio inputs and two audio outputs. I have a nanopi neo3 board, it has I2C and I2S and SPI bus available. Do you know if there are some drivers for audio codec that could work with this board connecting directly the board pins (i2s bus) to codec. If yes can you tell me please which could I use, if not please can you tell me some tips to follow to build the bridge between the soc_rockchip_i2s and tlv320aic31xx (for example) or some other (codec) board available. Best regards.

  11. AES has some major weaknesses, keys are breakable through timing attacks (dependent on implementation) due to it's design flaws http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.140.2835&rep=rep1&type=pdf I'm not sure if hardware accelerated AES-NI is vulnerable to timing attacks. But the bottom line is that AES is very complicated and easy to screw up in the implementation such that it's vulnerable to various attacks. ChaCha20 on the other hand (XChaCha20 in newer kernels) is simple to implement, (much faster than AES when implemented purely in software) and easy to reason about. The most secure cipher available seems to be DJB's XChaCha20. XCh…

I know this topic was requested many many times. but I would like to introduce more reasons about why to do so. Igor, I don't like RPI, and many of you also don't like it. but I am thinking on Armbian rather than RPI 1) supporting RPI would be a plus for people that use sd with RPI4. armbian works flawlessly on sr cards. 2) armbian need recognition and founding and supporting a mainstream SBC like RPI could bring that! 3) armbian is the best OS for ARM Linux. 4) something similar to the reason 2

This is the first opportunity I've had trying transmission-daemon on Linux with a 'real' workload of several hundred torrents. And as it turns out good old'n'stable Transmission 2.9x has a memory leak. It uses ~45 MB on Windows, and ~45 MB on Linux with v.3.0 from testing. But v.2.94 has climbed steadily from 50 MB up to ~350 MB within several days of use. This is a known issue (https://github.com/transmission/transmission/issues/313) that affects and has been affecting Debian stable. Memory leaks were plugged in…

  27. If you curl -I http://apt.armbian.com over and over again, you will receive a 302 redirect to what seems to be a random mirror. I am wondering how I can help add some sophistication to that randomness. As someone downloading updates from the US, it's a big exercise of patience to download at a rate of 20-60 KBps. As each package request goes to the redirector every time (since it's not a 301 redirect), some packages download at a good rate but plenty are very slow for me. In contrast, when I download an Armbian image from bittorrent, I can get 9MBps. I know that everything here is provided for free and I am grateful! I am asking how I can help make this…

I installed the blueberry app, which I have had good luck with in the past, and device connection has been great. Every device connects on the first try. 36. The reason MX Linux performed so well is, because, it uses some core components from Antix Linux Distro, which is optimised. based on Debian's "stable" branch. MX Linux is a cooperative venture between the antiX and former MEPIS communities, using the best tools and talents from each distro. It is a midweight OS designed to combine an elegant and efficient desktop with simple configuration, high stability, solid performance and medium-sized footprint.

I've noticed that the AppArmor kernel config was switched off from kernels 4.19.x onwards. I've searched the forum and the github issues but haven't found any problems related AppArmor. I'm using the current kernel for cubox (5.4.x) that I've compiled by adding AppArmor config back, everything works as it should for a headless system. Would it be possible to add the AppArmor kernel config back? I can help with testing on the following boards: cubox, olimex lime2, cubietruck

Adding the support of U2F usb security keys is straight forward on a system running udev already, it's just a text file. I do not know how much it can be useful on server and headless installations, but again the udev rules file if tiny. 70-u2f.rules

  59. As WiringPi was never meant to support other boards nor does the author like to support other boards and it is officially depreciated now (http://wiringpi.com/wiringpi-deprecated/). I want to ask why not put some efforts into libmraa https://github.com/intel-iot-devkit/mraa and put it into the Armbian repository. I have already a fork which fixes Rock Pi 4 on recent mainline 5.3 kernels with updated debian build scripts here: https://github.com/bootsy52/mraa, so debian packages could be simple built using dpgk-buildpackage. Why I think it is a good idea to supply libmraa with the Armbian repository Supporting multiple boards is a…

Touch screen amd sim management does not really matter for me, usb and wifi does. I think I am not the only one who thinks, my old 64 bit phones could be excelent servers.

Hi. Framebuffer: Please remove hardcoded framebuffer from the kernel if possible. (Example: Attaching 800x480 TFT Display to Olimex-A20-Micro results in prompt/armbian-config being out of sight because the forced resolution is 1024x768 and seemingly cannot be changed, bootenv isn't working) Touch Interface: None are currently really usable but it would be nice if armbian would ocasionally look over to postmarkedOS project and see if those can be provided. Namely: LuneOS interface, KDE Mobile, Maemo Leste

Right - we're all pretty sick of systemd controversy, and no intent to rehash that all here again with mostly marketed fanboy-ism on either side. Without trying to be a geezer that want's to go back to the old days, I think that at least offering an interesting choice for Armbian using Devuan and the classic style of init might be worthwhile. An interesting perspective might be seen from our BSD brethren, who of course don't take to systemd lightly, yet still see things interesting they may want to incorporate: Benno Rice provides an interesting talk about it. Hey, let's not start yet another fanboy war abou…

I've checked a few places, and noticed that the NanoPi NEO2 has had an upgrade to its CPU voltage regulator that does not seem to be reflected anywhere; the sunxi-linux wiki still reports that the regulator can provide only 1.1V, and I see no evidence of a regulator for the CPU in the device tree in the master mainline kernel branch. On the NEO2 V1.1, the CPU voltage regulator has been updated to provide GPIO-based voltage regulation, giving a selection of 1.1V (the same as the original board) or 1.3V (this setting is new). I'm quite new to kernel/device tree modifications, so I was wondering if anyone else was aware of this, and, if nobody is willing to incor…

Hello, I'm setting up my Odroids with Ansible and managed to automated almost everything. I just got a HC1 and read on the download page that I should load optimized board configuration in armbian-config. Sadly, armbian-config seems to be an interactive only tool. Are there ways to automate armbian-config? The easiest way would be command line arguments. I also tried to understand what the DTB menu options actually do from the source code but was unsuccessful. My best idea now is to use expect, but that doesn't seem stable: #!/usr/bin/expect set timeout 10 spawn armbian-config sleep 5 # Enter System menu send "\n" sleep 5 # Enter …

  71. Hello, The video from the "BalCCon2K17 conference presentation", seen here, is getting kind of old now. I really enjoyed it (thanks @Igor) , however, could a newer video please be made, and posted there instead (or in addition to the old one, maybe above it)? I'd like to hear how Armbian has progressed in the last 2 years, since that last video was made. Perhaps questions like the following could be addressed? What are the best, fastest new boards since that time, which have earned a status of "Supported"? For example, which boards have very stable SATA, M.2/NVMe ports/slots which are great for potentially making a NAS o…

  73. hello, it would be nice to have OctoPrint + Motion in armbian-config/Software/Softy In case someone does not know what I am talking about, I explain: All low-cost 3D printers are based on the opensource RepRap project, which has developed a firmware called Marlin that runs in Arduino. The problem of Arduino is that it is perfect for repetitive tasks, but it is lacking in other things, such as using the TCP-IP protocol, networks, it has very, very little memory, it does not support webcams, ect. So a project called OctoPrint was born that runs on ARM boards, and allows us to control our 3D printer, from a networked computer or from our mobile. …

After upgrading to buster (great!!) and installing desktop on my HC1, the standard procedure of starting a VNC server and using Real VNC viewer from a Mac ran into errors. I tried the following alternative solutions to get to the desktop - xrdp and Microsoft Remote Desktop (Mac) - tigervnc-scraping-server and Real VNC Viewer (Mac) --> No support for clipboard transfer, keyboard support awful and incomplete (missing # and | and so on) x11vnc with Real VNC Viewer (Mac) solved both issues, except keyboard autorepeat. So I strongly suggest adding x11vnc prominently as an alternative to xrdp.

I bought a TP-Link AC1300 "High Gain" WiFi adapter, in order to try to get a connection between my house and my garage. I thought that the included rtl8812 driver was the right one, but it turns out the AC1300 is the "V3" version of the Archer T4U, and it requires the rtl8822 driver. Well, it turns out that the driver at https://github.com/jeremyb31/rtl8822bu works straight up. I followed tkaiser's directions here: ...but changed "8812au" to "8822bu". Commands executed cleanly. I blacklisted 88XXau and rebooted, and everything worked great. And, I got the signal I needed, so it was worth the effort. Anyway, I just thought i…

  85. Thanks for Armbian, I very much enjoy it on my Cubietruck server. Forgive my ignorance if I have misunderstood something, but I believe that the Lima opensource Mali drivers will shortly be part of the kernel. https://lkml.org/lkml/2019/5/8/1122 What is the likelihood of Armbian supporting a hardware accelerated desktop using these drivers for the cubietruck and similar boards? It's an old board and is well supported by the project as a server already, so it would be understandable if it was out of scope.

  86. Hello, I would like to propose a change to the default kernel config for the Odroid XU4. This could *possibliy* done across all kernels: config-4.14.111-odroidxu4: CONFIG_USB_HID=m # CONFIG_HID_PID is not set CONFIG_USB_HIDDEV=y Basically it enables the USB_HID as a module instead of being compiled in and then enables the USB_HIDDEV which in my case the APCUPSD needs the option in order to communicate with the APC UPS device. From what I have read others have run into this problem and this would fix it. Does not seem there would be impact on anything else. Is it worth while making a pull request for this for the XU4 and/or others?

Panda bears are found in China, and many/most of these ARM boards were made in China. Her name would be "Armanda the Panda". 89. Once people not only get some board all working, but actually deployed to solve some real-world problem, there should be a place on this forum to showcase that, including pictures, or embedded videos. Any tricks or hacks they needed to use could be listed as well, in case others want to also do the same sort of project. For example the OpenMediaVault forum already has a sub-forum like this, called "My NAS build". Maybe this new subforum could be called something like "Deployment Showcase".
