I'm trying to get desktop showing thru USB-C connector with appropriate usb-c to hdmi cable. I don't find errors in Xorg.0.log, but still I get no signal to my TV. I've installed desktop via armbian-config. Never done USB-C to any display, so I think I need some pointers to debug and get it to work... Did not find howtos or alike.

If anyone in the US is looking for a Helios64 but don't want to wait for the next batch, I'm prolly selling mine. I ended up using an older windows desktop to build a server; took all of an hour to set up. I wanted to use this because it uses a lot less power and I wanted the computer for another project, but I don't have the time to screw with it trying to get it to actually function. If no one wants it, I'm just going to strip the case down as a HDD enclosure and cut my losses.

I've got my helios64 recently, and I wonder what type of FS to choose for main storage. I have five 4TB disk drives. I've installed OMV, made raid5 and format it with XFS. I use XFS because I work with this FS on Centos on my x86 servers, I don't use ext4 because I don't like when sometimes it starts to check filesystem during boot process. My setup is working perfect for a couple of weeks. I don't have any reboots or freezes or any issues that I've read on this forum. Now I think about migrating from XFS to BTRFS or ZFS. The main reason is to have file check-summing and scrub. Does anybody have btrfs with raid5 or ZFS with raidz1 on Helios64? Do you have any problems wit…

If anyone is interested, I've created a shell script that can be run with cron to check A/C and battery status, and do a graceful shutdown when a battery threshold is met. It also logs power outages, battery drain when off A/C, and when it posts a shutdown (if any). This is a simple script, nothing fancy, but works for me. It has a granularity of one minute (cron is limited to one minute intervals), but I've been able to keep the system up on heavy load for 4-5 minutes before the script generates a shutdown on low battery. The script is generous -- it waits for 916mV or less before a shut-down. This value was provided by the KOBOL team on their Wiki as the…

Last FriendlyElec nanopi-r2s image has hardware rng, what about adding it to Armbian? For my nanopi-r2s I patched dtb, compiled kernel module with dkms and managed to make it work with rngd. Amount of enthropy increased from ~2000 with haveged/jitterenthropy to ~4000. The only problem is FIPS failures so I had to run rngd with --ignorefail flag. Here is links to FE github: https://github.com/friendlyarm/kernel-rockchip/blob/2ea3d37e1de559b9af2cd24a71bb538dddc1365a/arch/arm64/boot/dts/rockchip/rk3328.dtsi#L250-L259 https://github.com/friendlyarm/kernel-rockchip/blob/2ea3d37e1de559b9af2cd24a71bb538dddc1365a/arch/arm64/boot/dts/rockchip/rk3328-nanopi-…

I ran the 5.8/5.9 kernel for weeks without any issues (no RAM unstability, no crash, no ethernet issue). Now I reinstalled the thing and came back to a 4.4 kernel to have USB-C support. The thing is… Once every hours, the 1GBps Ethernet disconnects. Once connected through serial port, I can check the port status and it's shown as `Unknown`. I can `ip link set down eth0; ip link set up eth0` to set it back up. Am I the only one with this issue ? Is it well known on 4.4 and solved on 5.9 ?

Hello, I received my Helios NAS last week, I installed armbian on eMMC with no issues. But I have a issue with my ssd and hdd. When I plug in my 5 HDD + my SSD, I only see 4 HDD ... But when I remove my SSD I can see the 5 HDDs ... So my question is stupid but it's "normal" ? I have a doubt, there is not a limitation with the GPT?

I built a version of Buster with the legacy kernel (4.4). when I try to install the media-buster-legacy-rk3328 package on the system, I get an error - unsatisfied dependencies on the kodi-rk package. I tried installing the Kodi-rk package manually, but it has an unsatisfied dependency on kodi-rk-bin. The kodi-rk-bin package is available and installed, but its version does not correspond to the links with Kodi-rk. Perhaps packages were updated in the repository, but dependencies do not work because of a complex package name (the alphabetical comparison condition is not met) ?

Hi What is the appropriate method to upgrade to a new release (20.11) without reimaging the SD card? I have not attempted this before as I have mainly used Ubuntu which provides sudo do-release-upgrade Note I am not using a VM or Docker. Can I upgrade the kernel using the downloaded Helios64 image? sudo apt install ./linux-image-<flavour> Is there a way to do it using armbian-config (like there is for raspi-config) Or do I need to download the armbian source and then compile ./compile.sh

Hi all, Something to share for those who use the USB-C serial console from another Linux host. Install and use 'tio' to connect to the serial console instead of minicom. This supports both 1500k baud and also can be easily used inside GNU screen (minicom gets a meta key conflict per default; CTRL-A is default meta key for both GNU screen and minicom). Minicom resulted in regular errors posted in syslog by the ftdi_sio kernel module. Did not run any strace to find out what syscall is causing it, but in short, tio appears to not treat the tty as a modem: no errors are popping up in syslog. Hopefully the serial consoles will remain up now. One caveat: I did not fin…

I have the Helios with two 10T disks mounted as a BTRFS raid 1 array. This setup is stable, although I have not stressed it a lot, except for when I do a btrfs scrub. It is using the 20.11.1 Buster image on SDcard. The disks have about 900GB of files. A btrfs scrub causes a crash with the following kernel output. Is this a known bug? Hello, good morning from Spain. My sincere congratulations to the Kobol and Helios64 team. A really good and well designed product. I have a question about the compatibility of a hard drive with the Helios64 NAS. My hard drive is ---> https://www.senetic.es/product/0F38459 <--- ( Wd Ultrastar 18TB) With a capacity of 18TB, my question is: Is that hard drive (18TB) compatible with the Nas Helios64? I think that in the Nas Helios64 technical description, it only accepts a maximum capacity of 16 Tb hard drives Thank you very much for the information and help.

During installing Helios64 with the latest image I experienced several times that the system did not come up. Now that it is fully installed with OMV enabled, I sometimes do a reboot, and the system does not come up. Unfortunately I cannot see anything on the console level (on MacOS). After pressing the reboot button (around one or two times) the system comes up as nothing happened ever. What can I do to have the system reboot in a stable manner? Since it will sit in the basement soon, I don't want to run down every time I see that it does not reboot properly.

I can see driver 2.13 is used, and Realtek has issued a 2.14 version, but only usable up to 5.6 kernel So I can't compile it.

Hello, I am quite new to this topic, and I have found it to be quite complex. I primarily work with tiny MCUs and RTOSes, but I am enjoying the Linux space so far. In essence I would like to use the Mali GPU that is embedded within the RK3399 of the Helios64 for hardware transcoding. This isn't a novel idea, as shown by these sources: https://forum.armbian.com/topic/9272-development-rk3399-media-script/ https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/66675-36078-transcoding-rockpro64/ I am using Jellying, and in so FFMPEG to decode/encode the data streams. It seems that V4L2 is supported for hardware ecoding/decoding in the FFMPEG p…

I've been trying to get OMV setup on the Helios prior to adding my hard drives and I keep getting errors and communication failures when I try to do pretty much anything. I like OMV for it's GUI, but honestly, I've never been a fan of it functionally. Is there anything comparable to it that works with the Helios64? Anyone have any suggestions how to fix it? I have logs but I don't see a place to attach them.

Hi, Not sure if anyone has seen the same as I have been seen on my box; the HDD status LEDs are cycling in brightness, from 0% to 100% and back to 0% continuously. It's a smooth transition, no flashy circus. I might have triggered this myself, but no idea how? Is this is a new feature? I tried to make some video of it, but it is quite difficult to see. With Armbian v20.11 one can write mainline u-boot image to board's SPI and enjoy booting nvme drives without any mmc devices. Prerequisities: ROCK Pi 4(A/B/C) v1.4 or 1.3 with SPI soldered in (v1.3 comes without SPI flash from the factory). If you already have Radxa's u-boot written to SPI you need to short pins 23 and 25 for Armbian to boot Boot fresh image of Armbian v20.11.x for ROCK Pi 4(A/B/C) Add the following lines to /boot/armbianEnv.txt overlays=spi-jedec-nor param_spinor_spi_bus=1 Reboot If you shorted 23-25 pins in 1.) then: disconnect them after the ROCK Pi 4 fully boot's …

Some of you may be interested to not only store your data on Helios64 but to also run other services on it - such as home automation. One of the popular platforms for home automation in Europe - and in Germany in particular - is "Homematic". They opened up their ecosystem some time ago and allow others to implement their own components (some excellent examples from Jérôme are here). As of yesterday - with the latest commit - it is possible to run a virtualised "ccu3" base station for that platform, called pivccu, with support for a detached antenna module (RPI-RF-MOD) coupled to Helios64 (and Armbian 20.11 kernel 5.9.10) through a tcp/ip network using a dedic…

If you want the fans of your Helios64 to start spinning earlier, look no further. This will allow the fans to spin at a constant speed from the earliest stage of initrd until fancontrol is started by the system. My use-case is for full disk encryption and recovery in initramfs, sometimes I can have the machine powered on for quite a while before fancontrol starts. Or, if the boot process encounters an error the fans may never start, this prevents that. Step 1: Tell initramfs to include the pwm-fan module echo pwm-fan | sudo tee -a /etc/initramfs-tools/modules Step 2: Create a new file at /etc/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-top/fan with the followin…

Hi, I’m using the Helios64 with Armbian 20.11 Buster ( 5.9.10-rockchip64) On every reboot the SMART counter for “Unexpected_Power_Loss (174)” / “POR_Recovery_Count (235)” incresses by one. I’ve seen this unexpected behaviour on Samsung, WD and Crusical SSDs … Rebooting the box with sync && echo 1 > /sys/block/sdX/device/delete && reboot turns the disk friendly off, but shouldn’t this be done in systemd/kernel?

Last night we lost power to the whole house, I had to manually start the NAS and when I tried to access my data there was nothing but empty shares. After checking OpenMediaVault Web UI and checking around, the file system status shows as "missing" and there is nothing under RAID Management and all the disks show properly under Storage > Disks. The NAS is set up as a Raid 6 on ext4 with five 12 TB drives. For starters, I wonder why the internal battery did not graciously shut down Helios64 as to avoid this from happening given that power outages are a rather common issue. Then, how do I get my file system back? After browsing some for…

My Helios64 was running fine with 5 HDDs for a couple of weeks, then I suddenly couldn't access the shares anymore and I noticed only two HDDs were running (the rest having no indicator lights). HDD slot 3, 4 and 5 appears "dead", no power up on boot, no indicator lights. I have checked both +12V and +5V rails and they are present, everything is plugged in. I can move the HDDs from slot 3, 4 and 5 to slot 1 and 2 and they will power up just fine. The hard drives also work in other machines. I'm a bit lost as to what might be wrong, any ideas?

Hey, I think a dedicated topic for ZFS on Helios 64 is needed. Many people want to have it As we know, and many of us playing with dev builds for helios ,it is no easy to work with ZFS I wrote few scripts maybe someone of You it can help in someway. Thanks @jbergler and @ShadowDance , I used your idea for complete it. The problem is with playing with OMV and ZFS plugin. then dependencies remove our latest version of ZFS. I tested. everything survived but ZFS is downgraded to latest version from repo for example: root@helios64:~# zfs --version zfs-0.8.4-2~bpo10+1 zfs-kmod-2.0.0-rc6 root@helios64:~# uname -…

Hi, I wanted to convert my root filesystem to btrfs. This allows me to use snapper to take regular snapshops. I also use btrbk to send my snapshots to my secondary storage (also a btrfs array). My root filesystems is installed to eMMC, but there isn't any reason you couldn't do this with an sd card. These instructions are done with a laptop running Linux. I'm using Debian in this case, although any distro with a recent kernel and btrfs tools installed should work. CAVEATS: The current u-boot image (2020.08.21) doesn't support booting natively to btrfs. u-boot *does* support btrfs though. Hopefully a future build of u-boot will add btrfs…

I once had openmediavault (nas software) and citadel-server (groupware software) running together on an x86 computer with Debian operating system. When I try this on Helios64 running armbian (Debian 10 Buster) and kernel 5.8, then the package manager does not allow it. That means, when I start with an installed openmediavault and want then to install citadel-server as well the package manager removes openmediavault first. Does anybody have an idea or a solution to the problem?

So I got my Helios64 today, built it with 2 drives, a Adata SSD on the M.2 and 2 Seagates on SATA 1 and 2. But whenever I want to boot it up, the internal blue system LED lights up + System Rail power (UPS installed) with all activity LEDs and HDD error 3 instantly with no delay. There is no Console output and nothing is to be heard spinning up. When building I noticed the cable harness having the same length for connectors 2 and 3 where 3 is too short for zip tie-ing. Help is greatly appreciated.

Hi, I noticed that on my board I didn't have notification with MOTD when updates were available and I think that I've found the culprit: In the file /usr/lib/armbian/armbian-apt-updates of the package linux-buster-root-legacy-nanopim4_20.08.17_arm64.deb, this line stop the script to go further : # give up if packages are broken [[ ! $(dpkg -l | grep ^..r) ]] && exit 0 If I remove the ! then it works (because the script, in fact, gives up if packages are not broken )

I just received my Helios64 system and built it today. The build included 3 drives, a SSD in port 1 and two HHD's on port 2 and 3. After the build, I installed Debian Kernel: 5.8 on an micro SD card. Linux Hell64 5.8.17-rockchip64 #20.08.21 SMP PREEMPT Sat Oct 31 08:22:59 CET 2020 aarch64 GNU/Linux I've been testing the performance and comparing to another NAS I have (WD PR4100) and the Helios64 performance has not been fairing well. Setup are almost identical on the same switch connected gig ethernet. Using SAMBA ,NO Raid. Testing with SATA drives HD's previously formatted for NTFS. and UAS USB 8 Bay DAS. Reading from Helios64 to Windows 10 PC I achieve expected 113MB/s and from USB attached to Helios 110MB/s. Writing speeds are very poor and as can be expected worse on the directly attached USB DAS. Can you guys share your experience with disk sleep on the Helios64 + Armbian. In my case I haven't seen the disks sleep - they are always spinning (or so they seem) and never on standby. I have a standalone /dev/sda and a RAID5 array with disks /dev/sd[b-e] (created with mdadm) - and XFS formatted logical volumes on top of these. 'iotop' says that nothing is accessing the disks: 'hdparm -B /dev/sd[a-z]' after each reboot is always: sudo hdparm -B /dev/sd[a-e] /dev/sda: APM_level = 254 /dev/sdb: APM_level = off /dev/sdc: APM_level = off /dev/sdd: APM_level = off /dev/sde: APM_level = off 'hdparm -C /dev/sd[a-z]' …

I'm on the Ubuntu focal release for the Helios64: Kernel: 5.8.14-rockchip64 If I try transferring between the 2.5Gbps port and my computer, either linked at 2.5Gbps or 1Gbps, will unlink. Getting system crashes and instability, including a loss of HD I/O, during very large file transfers. This happens over the network, whether using SCP, FTP, or SMB. I'm a hobbyist, and am no coder or developer, so other than Googling, I have no practical knowledge to pull on. Hello, How can I get a effective shutdown with the battery with legacy 4.4 (it always restarts) (2.5 Gbps OK) or How can the 2,5 Gbps performance issue be solved in 5.8 ? (that can shutdown OK) Which one is the easiest to address and solve for a beginner like me using OMV? Thank You! David

Has anybody got DAS mode working using USB-C ? Using: Armbian 20.08.21 Buster with Linux 5.8.17-rockchip64 I was not certain, I thought I read it was supported. I was hoping to use Windows 10 via USB 3.1 --> Helios64 USB-C to copy large video library. Note; using UART via COM3 is working as expected. Note; in windows I do remember seeing some USB error loading some USB driver; would it be related to some missing driver?int Any successful implementation of USB DAS interface; I would be happy to hear from you.

This is a continuation of ata1.00: failed command: READ FPDMA QUEUED noted by @djurny. I've experienced the same issue, and have some additional data points to provide. Since there is a thread about adding ZFS support to the U-Boot build, I thought I'd post a similar request for btrfs. I was looking through the helios u-boot repo a few days ago and noticed that it isn't built with btrfs support. While I could make a separate ext4 /boot partition, it would be convenient to have the entire eMMC formatted as btrfs. This allows for me to make easy and fast backups using btrfs send/receive, and also allows for snapshotting prior to upgrades (via e.g. snapper), and rolling back to a different snapshot at boot. My turris onmia router uses u-boot with btrfs native root, and I've used the snapshot rollback support a couple of times. They…

Continuing the discussion from here On a clean install of 20.08.21 im able to crash the box within a few hours of it being under load. It appears as if the optimisations are being applied root@helios64:~# cat /proc/sys/net/core/rps_sock_flow_entries 32768 The suggestion @ShadowDance made to switch to the performance governor hasn't helped. Anecdotally, I think I remember the crashes always mentioning page faults, and early on there was some discussion about memory timing. Is it possible this continues to be that issue?

To continue discussion from Helios64 Support Currently there is no plan to support to disable the power but it's interesting to know such use case. If we implemented this feature, you would need to go u-boot prompt to enable and disable the power. would this acceptable for you? Under Linux device tree, the power rail declared as regulator node with regulator-always-on property. This prevent kernel (and user) to turn off the regulator. Unless we are able to create device node for the SATA port, to act as consumer of the regulator, we can't remove the regulator-always-on property.

RockPi4a. Installed busster current 5.8.6 armbian onto eMMC. Works fine. Now i figure out i need swap space (app needs more than the 1G mem i have). So i boot another image from SD an use gparted to shrink the first partition from the end to create 4GByte and create a swap partition in there. Now the board won't boot anymore (see attached file). Erased SPI, no difference. Partition table shows GPT and "MBR protective" (before and after resizing). so, whats the magic to create a bootable armbian disk if one needs different partitioning than just the "full disk one partition" layout ? I can get the module 8188eu autoloaded at boot, but that doesn't change the non-availability of a wlan interface. Any help appreciated. I have posted the armbianmonitor -u output in the…

I am observing huge difference in samba speed (both ways to/from PC on Gigabit Ethernet) with Rock Pi 4B. Earlier I had Debian and Ubuntu provided by Radxa and recently speed has gone from 115 MB/s to ~12 MB/s. I moved to Armbian which is currently available for download. The bigger change that happened was kernel upgrade. I exclude problems like: PSU (it is over enough), home network (nothing has changed) and SSD speed (checked - 330 MB/s). Has anyone else also observed limited speed rec…

Hi All! I've recently moved to Armbian (Debian buster server) on my Rock Pi 4B - from Ubuntu provided by Radxa (some way failed upgrade). However system is booting from eMMC which has Radxa kernel and then directly to Armbian file system on SSD connected via USB 3.0. Great is that Armbian is working with Radxa kernel, which I want to change to 5.8.14-rockchip64. My question is how should I prepare /boot folder on eMMC (which is FAT file system) to boot Armbian kernel? Is there any other way (reformat eMMC for ext4@32768 sector for /boot folder) to achieve this? Thanks.

hey, this change https://github.com/armbian/build/pull/2010/files made my rockpi-4b (with 4GB ram) finally stable some time ago DDR_BLOB='rk33/rk3399_ddr_933MHz_v1.20.bin' #instead of 1.24 After messing with rx/tx offloading, this was the solution, no more failed apt and download errors, great! I have Rockpi 4b v1.4 and Armbian 20.05, kernel 5.4.49, installed and booted from NVME drive. For last months survived all minor Armbian updates, but after upgrading to 20.08 ( to kernel 5.8.10) board doesn't want boot. Steps to reproduce: 1.1 get Armbian_20.05.3_Rockpi-4b_buster_current_5.4.45.img.xz and write it to EMMC. 1.2 Boot board from EMMC, apt-get update, apt-get upgrade. Kernel upgrades from 5.4.49 to 5.8.12 1.3 Reboot. Board reboots fine. 2.1 get Armbian_20.05.3_Rockpi-4b_buster_current_5.4.45.img.xz and write it to NVME drive. Add fdtfile=rockchip/rk3399-rock-pi-4.dtb and overlays=pcie-gen2 to armbianEnv.txt. …

Hi, I'm new to armbian and I've started with RockPi4b board. I would like to add fan control with PWM, but adding pwm (or pwm0) overlay doesn't work. I can't also find the overlay for it at /boot/dtb-5.8.6-rockchip64/rockchip/overlay/. Is it supported? I've checked and the /sys/class/pwm/pwmchip0 is present, but accessing export, as described here : doesn't work and /sys/class/pwm/pwmchip0/pwm0 is not present. I've tried to find pwm access examples for this board, but none of it works on armbian (all are vendor builds specific). Can anybody point me in the right direction or give any hint how to enable pwm? EDIT…

Hi, I would like to know if it is possible to switch from the current branch to the legacy one as I've read that the board will be much more stable with the older kernel ? I've installed my NanopiM4 last march, and I've experienced some random freezes of my board after some time (can take weeks). It seems that one of my solutions would be to use the legacy kernel as it is much more stable - information I got by reading the forums (something I haven't done before because I'm stupid and was in a hurry...). Is it possible to downgrade only the kernel at all ? Here are the packages that (I think) I have to replace : linux-bu…

HI. I burned the latest official Rockpi4 focal kernel 5.8.x on both rockpi 4 B and C. The problem is only present on the C model. Both USB 2.0 aren't working at all.

I'm a complete noob to compiling kernels and have been struggling (and failing) for the past week to get an RT kernel compiled using Armbian build and reading various threads in the forum. Is it even possible? If so, what config options need to be set to get the correct kernel version matching the available rt patches? Thanks!

Hi, I want to know if there is another way to power the Nanopc-t4 besides the 12V input power jack. As far as I know the 12V power input is the only way but If someone have another idea or way to do power the board, it could be very helpful for me. Thanks.

First time user here. I got a Rock64 board and flashed Armbian_20.08.1_Rock64_focal_current_5.8.6_desktop.img using Etcher to an SD card. When I try to boot, nothing happens. If I examine the SD card on my Linux PC, there is only one partition on it and it appears to be a kernel image. I assumed that the .img file would have the U-Boot partition as well. Is there a different type of image file I should be using that would contain everything that I need to boot? If not, how do I create such an image?
