Hi, Armbian_23.02.2_Orangepi5_jammy_legacy_5.10.110 works well with my OPI5. I can ssh to and play with it from my Debian desktop. I don't have HDMI monitor so I want to try serial port. i'm using USB-TTL cable to connect OPI5 to my Debian box. Then in Debian bash I use this command to connect to the port screen /dev/ttyUSB0 Then power on the OPI5. The output is garbled: If i change it to cs7 (screen /dev/ttyUSB0 cs7), the output is still something I cannot understand: The stty command and output: $ sudo stty --file=/dev/ttyUSB0 --all speed 9600 baud; rows 0; columns 0; line = 0; intr = ^C; quit = ^\; erase = ^?; kill = ^U; e…

My Orange Pi 5 with latest debian does not reboot. I use it faceless (without local screen) via RDP (LAN) from Windows, works fine. But I cannot reboot. Neither via RDP nor via SSH. The green LED stops blinking, the red LED continues. But no LAN access. Must do hard reset via button or power off/on. Any ideas?

Hi. Great work with Armbian. Any good advice setting up Wayland and pipewire (for OBS studio) on the Orange pi 5 (23.02 jammy gnome)? I did manage to install both pipewire+pipewire-media-session+pipewire-pulse+related qt5 Wayland package and setting up QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland environment variable. But no luck.

Hi guys, First post here, I successfully managed to flash and boot Armbian 25.8.2 (Bookworm Minimal) from an SD card. Everything was working great, HDMI output and network included. I then ran “sudo armbian-install” and selected Option 4 to move the system to my NVMe SSD and make it boot from there. The process itself completed without errors. However, after shutting down and removing the SD card and powering on again the system doesn’t boot. I have the red LED turned on however the green LED that was previously flickering doesn’t turn on. There’s also no HDMI output and the board doesn’t connect to the network. I tried ins…

Greetings, I have an Orange Pi 5 with the edk2 1.1 UEFI bios on the SPI, and an NVMe installed. The BIOS has been set to "Mainline" in the device tree option I tried visiting here https://armbian.com/boards/uefi-arm64 and burning the minimal current6.18.8 CLI image to my USB stick. The Orange Pi 5 displays the graphical grub menu with no problems, complete with penguin in the background etc, but once I choose the boot Armbian option, it displays a few lines of terminal output and then the monitor goes black as if the GPU is initializing and a desktop or graphic would be about to show - when instead, the monitor just reports no signal instead. The system isn't…

Hello all! In Orange Pi OS latest image all works well EXCEPT it keeps launching apps in a stupid bordered window that has a huge obnoxious bar at the top with 2 absolutely useless buttons, a window to full screen option and the X button How do I hide this stupid thing? It's blocking the whole top of my screen and cutting off part of my TiviMate Pic here https://imgur.com/a/8uo8WrM

Hello Armbian forum, I need to have a GPIO interrupt on Orange PI5. I have successfully installed WiringOP and I am using it with C code. The problem is that the interrupt is not working, and I am receiving the following error. How can I proceed? Does anyone know how to enable the WiringOP interrupt on the GPIO PIN? I have an Orange Pi 5 (16GB RAM) running Armbian Jammy with the latest updates installed. I am booting from NVMe and when it boots successfully it runs flawlessly without issue. The problem occurs when I reboot -- the majority of the time it does not boot up successfully. Sometimes when it boots I only see the red light (and no green light), and other times I will see the green light flash like normal, yet the external hard drive does not spin up or mount properly. This results in me needing to power down the Orange Pi 5 and try again. Eventually it will boot up successfully (along with the external HDD) and then everything is good; that is, until the next time I have to …

With the prior image and kernel 5.10.110 I was able to run compile.sh and produce the linux-source-legacy-rockchip-rk3588_23.02.0-trunk_all.deb which provided the kernel source in /usr/src/linux-source-5.10.110-rockchip-rk3588.tar.xz. I downloaded the latest img which provides kernel 5.10.160 which booted fine. However, running the same compile.sh process I used previously with success produced the older deb package that contains the 5.10.110 kernel source. There were a couple of errors displayed. My compile.sh command is: ./compile.sh BOARD=orangepi5 BRANCH=legacy BUILD_ONLY=kernel RELEASE=jammy KERNEL_CONFIGURE=no The first error encountered was …

Hello, I am running Armbian 23.05 "minimal" (with the provided kernel 5.10.110) on my OrangePI 5 4GB. Upgraded all packets to latest. When trying to run GeekBench 5.5.1 ARM Preview, it reboots when approaching the end of multicore tests, with "performance" governor and default speed range (0.4 - 2.4 GHz for A76). Same goes if I drop the max clock speed to 2.2 for A76. After dropping to 2.0 GHz max, it runs fine; but this hurts performances quite a bit. I tried various power sources, including a bench PSU which can reliably supply up to 30A (but I only see a few spikes over 2A). The board has a large heatsink installed wit…

I don't work with this board often, because it has been so stable, so I am less familiar with the boot process. I rebooted it today, and realized that it wouldn't post. Hello people, Happily running Bookworm, because it was the mainstream download for OPI5 a few months ago, I now see that the main download for OPI is back to Jammy. Apart from hardware accceleration, Bookworm runs great for me. In fact HA is not crucial for my server usage, though it would be nice. Question: what is the reason the main OPI5 download is now back to Jammy in stead of Bookworm? And what would be the advantages of going back from Bookworm to Jammy? (Got the aluminium passively cooling case for the OPI5, so far it's been great, 10 minutes of stresstesting all 8 cores doesn't get above 70 degrees celsius. For reference my…

I tried installing the OS using SD card and EMMC, but both failed. Orange Pi OS (Arch) on the official website ran normally. However, I installed focal_desktop_xfce or jammy_desktop_gnome from Ubuntu Image, but they all failed. After inserting the image into the SD card, the symptom is a black screen and no booting. Does it only support SSD? Because it is entered through a translator, there may be unnatural sentences. If you reply about that, I will get back to you.

Standard install - Armbian Bookworm, full 'firmware install'. I am getting some packet loss over the LAN. A raspberry pi, Synology NAS and Deban x86 install on the same LAN do not seem to exhibit the same loss. Anyone have experience or ideas? Oddly enough this never seems to occur on fresh installs. This is a docker host for pihole and home assistance, no other packages are really installed at all. I've not really tried much, but since this is a standard install, apt-get update & upgrade are about the only modifications outside of docker install that has occurred. 1. This plugs directly in to a Ubiquiti switch 2. I have tried a few differ…

I did a bit of reading - to prevent ubuntu packages to update the rockchip optimized packages, you need to pin the packages. There is a simple way to do that. 1. Create a file called rockchip-multimedia-ppu in /etc/apt/preferences.d with Package: * Pin: release o=LP-PPA-liujianfeng1994-rockchip-multimedia Pin-Priority: 600 2. Create a file called panfork-mesa-ppu in /etc/apt/preferences.d with Package: * Pin: release o=LP-PPA-liujianfeng1994-liujianfeng1994-panfork-mesa Pin-Priority: 600 You can verify that the apt configuration is working correctly with sudo apt policy chromium-browser which should return chrom…

Hello, I have roughly 30 Orange Pi 5 here in the office setting up for deploying in the field. NVMe boot is working great after using 'nand-sata-install' to flash the MTD. But sometimes (rarely, but happens), when issuing a reboot of Armbian, after full kernel shutdown, the player does not boot back up. Power light is on, no activity blinking LED. Network link and activity blinking. Just won't boot. Requires physically disconnecting power for a few seconds then re-plug to get to boot. I have watchdog set in Armbian and tested that works. So this seems to be before Linux kernel has taken control. Is there any way to enab…

Hi Guys, It seems that I can't boot latest Armbian image from SD-card - system always boots into "inintramfs". See the screenshot. SD-card is 100% working (all sectors tested). The image - 25.11.1_noble_6.12.58_gnome_desktop (downloaded from front page of OrangePi5). Checksum is OK. Please note - I've already tested 3 different prorgams for images: USB-imager, Rufus, Win32diskimager. Nothing helped))). I also re-wrote MTD flash (not sata) by "armbian-install" and got nothing (!) I use my main Armbian-server installed on nvme, but I would prefer to run SD-images as well... Unfortunately, as I see, this became very difficult task lately(((. …

Inspired by Bazzite OS, and remind me of experience on Armbian (not just armbian), basically on Orange PI 5/ OPI5+, it'll be solid OS if update failure/ anything went wrong can rollback to previous safe copy. Pain-point: I just want to use the system, not keep re-flashing OS. nixOS is good, but I don't want to re-learn everything ... and giving up my Ubuntu eco-system. Sorry I'm still testing out, and failing with existing Armbian-Config approach, I'm trying my own appraoch, Iknew the rules here, wait until I success I'll share it here. Hello folks, I happily run Armbian Jammy XFCE on my much beloved Meko box (with at least SOME hardware accel) and Bookworm on Orange Pi 5. Both run excellent, but Jammy/xfce is a bit more snappy. probably because of partly harware accell. On the Meko R3588 4Gb box I installed Docker, Portainer, MQTT server container, Home Assistant container. All is well. I operate my boxes via RealVNC, so that it also will work seemlessly when VPN is active. The containers are so extremely light that they hardly take a few percent CPU. Home Assistant container takes 0,5Gig or so, MQTT server takes 0.1Gig. My first encounter with docker is very positive! Next I will try to add open VPN an…

Hi, SD card did not load Armbian_25.8.1_Orangepi5_trixie_current_6.12.41_xfce_desktop. I noticed that in boot.cmd line 9 , rootdev is defined as /dev/mmcblk0p1. Should that be /dev/mmcblk0n1 or /dev/mmcblk0n1p1? I note that this file should not be edited and the armbianEnv.txt only refers to rootdev=UUID=7e27c862-0a39-41cd-891e-7d77ff7968fd. Is this an error or am I off course? If so where do I correct it? cheers

Expected behavior: rastered content is smooth like so: Observed behavior: rasterization is very pixelated: Workaround: go to about:flags and change #enable-gpu-rasterization to disabled, however this makes sites such as geogebra.org/calculator run very slow.

Hello! Iv'e just done a test run installing Armbian for booting off my new m.2 nvme drive. As 'm planning to have the drives 2nd large partition as my basic home file server I'm wondering if I can as easily re-install the OS if/when I need to update it to a newer one? Because the instructions I followed and that I see around do a very basic cat /dev/mmcblk1 > /dev/nvme0n1 onto the raw un-partitioned nvme. My case will be that I have data on a partition on that drive that needs to stay. Is this going to be an issue or are there ways to re-install Armbian or even other distro on the boot partition? Cheers!

Hey folks, im trying to compile a realtime kernel for mt orange pi 5. I plan to use it for djing. A fully preemptive kernel delivers better performance for this, as less xruns appear. I am following the official dev instructions and am using the docker method, Compiling only the kernel, not the entire armbian OS. In March 2023 I bought an OPI5 and immediately went for armbian, but I had problems and reported it in the link in this POST. in 2024: I bought the SD cards and other power supply directly from the manufacturers to see if the OPI5 works. I downloaded and burned the latest stable version of Bookworm and the results were the same, errors and everything froze. Before throwing OPI5 in the trash, I downloaded "nightly builds (unstable)" and installed it on an nvme and... it works without problems, I've had no problems for 13 days. In conclusion, the SD card reader is damaged and I can only use the NVME. HELP: I ask you for help with the command (.…

I have an Armbian installation on the NVMe drive and I'm trying to switch back to boot from SD card. In `armbian-config` I messed up the boot settings by leaving the root fs type unchanged, (SD card is in fat32 but NVMe partition is ext4). Now the board boots into initramfs prompt. Here's what I've already tried based on search and ChatGPT: Mount the NVMe partition to `/mnt` then chroot to it, this did work but the `/boot` partition was not mounted inside of the chroot so I can't fix boot env. I also tried `switch_root` but it's not available in the initramfs prompt. Update `/proc/cmdline` to change the root fs back to the Armbian partition…

I saw that you now have a stable release of armbian for opi5. I installed Armbian 23.02.0-trunk.0112 Bullseye a week ago. Now I'm wondering if it is possible to switch back to the stable version without reinstalling the system. The OPI is now running in production and I have several containers running on it. This is what I tried -> armbian-config -> system -> nightly after that back to stable -> armbian-config -> system -> stable ->armbian-config -> system -> other -> linux-image-legacy-rockchip-rk3588=22.11.4 But after login I always see: Welcome to Armbian 23.02.0-trun…

Hello, I installed lm-sensors on my Opi5 and I'm able to check temperatures, however I don't know how to make the little fan spin when the temperature rise. I know the temperature is not going to rise till critical levels, but I live in very hot country and I just don't want my device to become too hot. And do you know how to make the fan start at certain temperature rise? Also I'm not sure which pins I should connect the fan to.. One pin should be the 3.3V to get the power, what about the other one? I'm running Armbian 23.02.2 with kernel 5.10.110-rockchip-rk3588 Thanks in advance

Not sure if the rolling release includes the UART dtb yet, but when I build my own image (jammy xfce kernel 5.10.110) I don't have the UART dtbs in /boot/dtb/rockchip/overlay/ . As a result, I couldn't add uart0-m2 to /boot/armbianEnv.txt and get /dev/ttyS0 when I was following the official user manual to enable UART. After some researching I managed to solve this by copying the dtb file from orange pi's official ubuntu image to /boot/overlay-user and enable UART with user_overlays=rk3588-uart0-m2 in armbianEnv.txt . Rebooted and it works. However, I suppose it would be better to include the dts files in kernel patches? I'm posting this because I don't know what…

I thought I had read that someone had the T2U working out of the box. Well, it's mostly there. When I tried it, didn't work. Got message in dmesg that firmware file not found. Did a Google search and found that it came down to the mediatek firmware files needing to be in the /lib/firmware/mediatek directory but they are currently in the /lib/firmware directory. FYI, the /lib/firmware/mediatek directory already existed and did not need to be created. Also in the current Jammy Gnome desktop Armbian, the file that was being loaded, mt7610e.bin, was not there and only the backup file, mt7610u.bin, was there in the /lib/firmware directory. What I d…

Needed/wanted to add Bluetooth to my OPi5 and also needed WiFi at the same time. Did not want to use 2 USB ports so I tried the T2UB. Working well. Bluetooth appeared on my Armbian Ubuntu Jammy setup and I plugged in the dongle. It saw a few of my bluetooth devices. Reason I wanted bluetooth is to use a controller for some games/emulators. I'll make another post for that. My PS4 Dualshock controller is not showing up in the list of devices. My version is an older version, Armbian 23.06.420 Jammy with Linux 5.10.160-rk35xx No end-user support: built from trunk Conclusion: TPLink T2UB should work properly on Armbian Ubuntu desktop.

Hi everyone!👋 I would like to turn off the leds on my Orange Pi 5. I already tried this with no success, since I can't find the mentioned files (I have /sys/class/leds/status_led instead of red/orangepi etc.). Any tips? Thank you in advance! 🙂

I installed U-Boot in the Orange Pi 5's SPI memory, connected via UART via the CH340G adapter (the power switch is lost). The speed is 1500,000 baud, 8n1. Connected TX-RX, RX-TX, GND-GND. After starting the board, I see the logs, but I can't enter anything at all. When I change the power supply, the input works, but it enters incomprehensible characters instead of the usual ones. When installing the EDK2-RK3588, there was no such problem on the same power supply and adapter. How can I fix the UART input?

Hopefully this is not a stupid question but I came across Joshua-Riek/ubuntu-rockchip: Ubuntu for Rockchip RK35XX Devices (github.com) when searching for my video playback issues. Does anyone know how this compares with the current armbian release with vendor kernel? Are all the fixes from that release integrated in armbian or does it go the other way?

Hello everyone, I use my Orange Pi 5 board to run Open Media Vault with Wireguard installed. But there is a known issue with Wireguard that, when installing it, you have to manually reinstall the correct kernel into the board again, otherwise it won't be able to boot. However, ever since it has been installed, during apt update / apt ugrade of my board, it keeps recognizing the wrong kernel to be updated and changing the symlinks inside the /boot/ folder, rendering the board unbootable. If I see this happening, I can change the symlinks and it works normally after that. However, sometimes the symlinks changes unnoticed and I cannot boot anymore. I…

A few days ago I had an issue with a successfully running Armbian installation running from the NVME of my Orange Pi 5 that suddenly developed an issue with nothing being shown on my TV. So after seemingly not being to identify the problem, I started again, wrote the image to an SD card and then moved the installation to the NVME drive using armbian-config utility. So now that I have a set-up that works again, I want to instigate a more belt and braces approach and create an image of the NVME installation using GZIP to compress the image file and decided to use the DD option from terminal. Having tried well over a hundred different comb…

Hello, I have installed the Armbian 26.2 minimal IOT image based on Debian 13 Trixie - with the 6.18.x kernel - and I noticed the USB2 port (the single, vertical port next to the Ethernet port) is not working. Is this a limitation of the mainstream kernel (6.18.x) - i.e. does this work only with the vendor kernel (6.1.x) ? NB: I upgraded to 6.19 using the 'edge' kernel, but I'm seeing the same behavior. Here's the armbianmonitor outpur - https://paste.armbian.com/raw/udefojuxuk

Are there any USB WiFi adapters that are supported out of the box? Nothing fancy, just looking for a cheap readily available USB WiFi adapter that doesn't require finding kernel headers and downloading modules to compile that will then be wiped out by the next release. I am currently using Armbian_23.02.0-trunk.0220_Orangepi5_jammy_legacy_5.10.110_xfce_desktop.img installed and booting from a 256GB NVME drive. Ethernet is an option but I'd like to make it more portable. What have you guys used and had success with? My network is WiFi 6+ but not having the best speed is just fine. Thanks in advance.

I'm trying to use an SPI driven TFT display on the orange pi 5, but I'm stuck on enabling SPI in the first place. Looking at the pinout of the orange pi 5 in its manual, it appears that SPI4...M0 is the only bus broken out to the pins. However, enabling "rk3588-spi4-m0-cs1-spidev" in the armbian-config menu does not seem to do anything, as no /dev/spi device exists after a reboot. Enabling any of the other spi hardware functions seems to work just fine, creating a /dev/spi device as expected, but none of the other spi busses are accessible through the pin header. Since I re-installed 23.8 Jammy with the extra ppa:liujianfeng1994 repo - I haven't been able to play any videos on my OPI5. All players I tried seem to have kernel issues decoding any h264. I've narrowed down the error message to a 4Gb memory limit with the selected version of the drivers but I was wondering if anyone had luck with playback. I had better luck with Jammy 23.4 and I regret upgrading. What is the recommendation? Should I try nightly with 6.6.0-rc1 kernel? I assume this one doesn't need panfork drivers anymore or are there other recommendations for h264 playback?

I found this amazing page https://linux-sunxi.org/Sunxi-Cedrus#VLC that explains alot on VLC and hardware accelleration but I cannot clearly figure out if my playback is using hardware acceleration. I did follow all the steps to optimize chromium with the ppu sources - chromium doesn't work well yet for me - so not sure if that install worked as expected. My playback of h264 in VLC is super smooth but I have around 20-35% cpu usage (1080p videos) - I know h264 is more demanding than AV1 but someone reported AV1 with 15% CPU usage and 4k. Is there anything I can do to make sure the hardware acceleration is working (aka the VA-API is used)?

Greetings everyone. I hope to receive some assistance here. Our company is a small Linux cloud gaming provider that uses the Cinnamon edition of Linux Mint for our cloud gaming services https://maximumsettings.com/ . We are searching for an affordable local streaming device that we can recommend to our clients, capable of decoding H.265 at 4K - 80Mbps. The Orange Pi 5 is a perfect fit for this role, and the Armbian Cinnamon desktop is well-suited since our clients already use Linux Mint Cinnamon edition on the cloud Gaming PC. However, there is currently no support for our open-source streaming client, Moonlight, which we use as the default option for our clients. T…

Hello! I'm trying to look around in the Armbian build/config scripts to see how I can enable a mainline v6.15-rc3 kernel to be built. I did try to make a build/userpatches/lib.config file with the contents, KERNELBRANCH="tag:v6.15-rc3" But that's not working. Would anyone be able to tell me the file I need to edit for an OrangePi 5? Update: I actually seem to have it try by editing config/sources/families/rockchip-rk3588.conf changing the version tag. But I get a bunch of red errors complaining about SHA1. hmm...an 'rc3' is probably not to be found in a tree with 'stable' in it. Cheers! Fred

Hello!! I just got my Orange Pi 5 the other day and am trying to 'port' a program I've been working on for RPi4b over to this new board. Armbian 24.5.1. I don't have a serial console setup so I can't tell if it's actually starting to boot or not, but it never gets to the point where a video signal is sent to HDMI. It *does* send a CEC on signal to the TV, which does turn on, and power-cycling the Pi then begins a normal boot process. Pi also boots normally headless. Problem noted on one Insignia model and on a Vizio TV, works as expected on another Insignia model, on a Hisense and on an LG. Issue began after updating the kernel from legacy.

Hello, I cloned the master branch of WiringOP one month ago, it reported same version 2.46 and it was working except for the option to activate internal pull up/down. Trying it in C code using: pullUpDnControl(n, PUD_DOWN); or by terminal with: gpio mode 1 down same behavior, nothing happen.. by default, unfortunately in my case, it seem active a pull up resistor for all inputs. I don't know why, I think after doing "sudo apt update/upgrade" (but I'm not sure), the wiringOP library on "orange pi 5" with Armbian 23.02.2 doesn't work anymore. I finally found an official source code on the download page of OrangePI that has a version of wiring pi with support for the Orange PI 5 - unfortunately that code is not on the github of orangepi yet. What would be the best way to get this code and the gpio tool into armbian? Build a PPA and package for that one? I don't mind forking their repo and adding the mods but I'm not familiar with generating debian packages.
