Rk3588 boards now share the same linuxfamily as rk3568 and rk3566 boards. It means rockchip-rk3588 kernel won't get update longer. Here is some steps for migration: sudo sed -i 's/LINUXFAMILY=rockchip-rk3588/LINUXFAMILY=rk35xx/g' /etc/armbian-release sudo apt update sudo apt install linux-image-legacy-rk35xx linux-dtb-legacy-rk35xx linux-headers-legacy-rk35xx sudo apt remove linux-image-legacy-rockchip-rk3588 linux-dtb-legacy-rockchip-rk3588 linux-headers-legacy-rockchip-rk3588 NOTE: The steps are currently for beta branch only. Don't try on stable branch.

My experience so far: 1. Booting up (Jammy/Bullseye) from SD, HDMI out to 1440p display cuts off text at the bottom. It affects installation and later use. I need to press ENTER several times to all questions until text moves up in the buffer and becomes visible, and then blindly type the answer to proceed to the next step, then several ENTERs to scroll again, and so on. Looking at fbset and stty output: me@opi:~$ fbset -i mode "2560x1440" geometry 2560 1440 2560 1440 32 timings 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 accel true rgba 8/16,8/8,8/0,0/0 endmode Frame buffer device information: Name : rockchipdrmfb Address : 0 Size …

I am attempting to install the file Armbian_23.02.0-trunk.0112_Orangepi5_jammy_legacy_5.10.110_cinnamon_desktop.img from https://www.armbian.com/orangepi-5/ but the installation hangs at the point where the root password should be entered. The same happens with the file Armbian_23.02.0-trunk.0112_Orangepi5_jammy_legacy_5.10.110_minimal.img. If i use the file Armbian_22.11.3_Orangepi5_jammy_legacy_5.10.110_cinnamon_desktop.img from the Github archive the installation completes. I have tried to raise a bug but the only solution for not booting are hardware and the installation has not progressed far enough to enter any commands. Any assistance welcomed.

Guys, i'm new. I've added a screenshot with the shell output on hdmi. I can boot from SD but that's not what i need. Any thoughts whats going on?

In March 2023 I bought an OPI5 and immediately went for armbian, but I had problems and reported it in the link in this POST. in 2024: I bought the SD cards and other power supply directly from the manufacturers to see if the OPI5 works. I downloaded and burned the latest stable version of Bookworm and the results were the same, errors and everything froze. Before throwing OPI5 in the trash, I downloaded "nightly builds (unstable)" and installed it on an nvme and... it works without problems, I've had no problems for 13 days. In conclusion, the SD card reader is damaged and I can only use the NVME. HELP: I ask you for help with the command (.…

I'm trying to setup LIRC on my OPI5 but I can't find any details on how that would be possible. I checked the kernel configuration and I cannot see any references to LIRC either. The module list has nothing obvious - is this feature completely disabled? Any suggested alternatives?

*UPDATED - The issue is the powered USB3 hub which is actually NOT USB3 as advertised and is instead USB2. Sorry to have wasted your time* Hi, I have a 1TB SATA SSD in a USB3 enclosure (that supports UASP) connected to a USB3 powered hub, which in turn connects to the Top USB3 port of an Orange Pi 5 4GB. Armbian (Debian Bookworm) is installed and running from a 128GB NVME drive plugged into the M2 slot of the Orange Pi 5. If I do an "lsusb -t" I get the output shown below. The SSD is Bus 02, Port 3, Dev 5 and is using the uas driver but is showing USB2 speed of 480M rather than USB3 speed of 5000M. I have also tried pluggi…

and, BTW, this will probably work on any SBC that has pwm and working port of wiringPi (wiringOP is much simpler than the dtbo method, IMO) WHY: I don't like fans that run full speed ALL the time pwm fans are a bit limited on the ground in small size, and expensive The SBC has pwm pins, so why not use them none of the examples I have found are adequate, either gpio off/full or excessive python scripts, 40 lines or more,, the bash script is ~ 10 lines Some of the wiringOP/gpio packages don't work (ubuntu-full desktop) try the commands in rc.local, if they don't work, then,,, dpkg -l |grep wiring; apt remove ..... git clone https://github.com/orangepi-x…

I have an Orange Pi 5 (16GB RAM) running Armbian Jammy with the latest updates installed. I am booting from NVMe and when it boots successfully it runs flawlessly without issue. The problem occurs when I reboot -- the majority of the time it does not boot up successfully. Sometimes when it boots I only see the red light (and no green light), and other times I will see the green light flash like normal, yet the external hard drive does not spin up or mount properly. This results in me needing to power down the Orange Pi 5 and try again. Eventually it will boot up successfully (along with the external HDD) and then everything is good; that is, until the next time I have to …

Hello, I'm planning on running a k3s cluster with Rook storage with a few of the Orange Pi 5 that I got. A prerequisite for rook however is RBD module. I've been able to recompile the kernel including RBD support, however I've been unable to get the device to boot from the new kernel. Rebooting after kernel has been built and installed still reports Linux 5.10.110-rockchip-rk3588. Any help would be appreciated. I've since wiped the boxes clean and have a fresh install booting from SSD with the OS installed on the NVMe attached so I will be able to provide any information required. Thanks!

On my Orange Pi 5, I have successfully installed the X11VNC server. I followed the guide at the following link X11VNC and everything works as expected. I can connect with Real VNC from another device and see the desktop of the Orange Pi as if I were in front of its display. However, when the Orange Pi 5 is powered on without a display connected to the HDMI port, the access with Real VNC doesn't work as before. I get a black screen and I am unable to interact with the Orange Pi. I had a similar issue with Raspberry Pi, where I could resolve it by setting a default screen resolution. How can I achieve this with Armbian? How can I configure an alternative resolution when the…

Greetings everyone. I hope to receive some assistance here. Our company is a small Linux cloud gaming provider that uses the Cinnamon edition of Linux Mint for our cloud gaming services https://maximumsettings.com/ . We are searching for an affordable local streaming device that we can recommend to our clients, capable of decoding H.265 at 4K - 80Mbps. The Orange Pi 5 is a perfect fit for this role, and the Armbian Cinnamon desktop is well-suited since our clients already use Linux Mint Cinnamon edition on the cloud Gaming PC. However, there is currently no support for our open-source streaming client, Moonlight, which we use as the default option for our clients. T…

Hello!! I just got my Orange Pi 5 the other day and am trying to 'port' a program I've been working on for RPi4b over to this new board. The program is using ffmpeg to decode h264 and hevc video streams. My main question is how do I need to configure the ffmpeg codex context and formats to make use of (ideally zero copy) HW accelerated video decode on Orange Pi 5? For the raspberry code I was using these: avcodec_find_decoder_by_name("hevc"); and avcodec_find_decoder_by_name("h264_v4l2m2m"); together with codec_context->pix_fmt = AV_PIX_FMT_DRM_PRIME; // for zero copy video path But this does not work when compil…

Hi Basically the subj sums it up. I got the AP6275P wireless module with Armbian, and BT is not functional. `hcitool dev` doesn't show the device in its output. Neither does `rfkill`. It works with the Ubuntu image published by Orange Pi though, so it doesn't look like a hardware issue. I'm using Armbian 23.5 Jammy Gnome with the 5.10.160 kernel. Happy to provide any additional data.

I originally posted this on reddit after seeing a lot of posts trying to use a SATA M.2 SSD and saying it wouldn't boot with replies telling them to go buy a NVME M.2 SSD which isn't necessary when the board does support SATA M.2 with flashing the correct bootloader. Hello! Iv'e just done a test run installing Armbian for booting off my new m.2 nvme drive. As 'm planning to have the drives 2nd large partition as my basic home file server I'm wondering if I can as easily re-install the OS if/when I need to update it to a newer one? Because the instructions I followed and that I see around do a very basic cat /dev/mmcblk1 > /dev/nvme0n1 onto the raw un-partitioned nvme. My case will be that I have data on a partition on that drive that needs to stay. Is this going to be an issue or are there ways to re-install Armbian or even other distro on the boot partition? Cheers!

I thought it would be easy, but I am now turning in circles, so I am asking here. I have a working system booting on NVME (when no SD card inserted), with two partitions nvme0p1 (256Mb) and nvmeop2 (40Gb) I would like to clone my working system on a SD card. How shall I proceed? I am not asking details instruction, only the rough path I should follow (e.g. dd partitions, tune2fs ......). PS: I thought it would be easy, but whatever I do, the system keep taking /boot on the nvmeop1, so I really struggle to boot on the /boot of the SD card

Hello people, Happily running Bookworm, because it was the mainstream download for OPI5 a few months ago, I now see that the main download for OPI is back to Jammy. Apart from hardware accceleration, Bookworm runs great for me. In fact HA is not crucial for my server usage, though it would be nice. Question: what is the reason the main OPI5 download is now back to Jammy in stead of Bookworm? And what would be the advantages of going back from Bookworm to Jammy? (Got the aluminium passively cooling case for the OPI5, so far it's been great, 10 minutes of stresstesting all 8 cores doesn't get above 70 degrees celsius. For reference my…

Hi Guys, It seems that I can't boot latest Armbian image from SD-card - system always boots into "inintramfs". See the screenshot. SD-card is 100% working (all sectors tested). I'm looking for information about the Ethernet chip on the Orange Pi 5. I need an SBC that has PTP hardware timestamp support (IEEE 1588). According to OrangePi.org, the Orange Pi 5 has the Motorcomm YT8531C, but I have not been able to find documentation that provides the answer about hardware PTP support. Most likely it does not, but I'd like to confirm on an actual device before purchasing one. If you have an Orange Pi 5, you can test this with this command: ls /sys/class/net |xargs -n1 ethtool -T If there is someone that is willing to run this command and post the output, I would appreciate it very much. Hi all! I'd like to share a small personal project that I've been working on recently for the Orange Pi 5 (and potentially other RK3588 boards). Like many RK3588 users, I wanted to run Kodi on a modern mainline Linux kernel instead of relying on older vendor kernels. After a lot of testing, debugging and learning, this project started to take shape, and I've a stable almost "all works" setup Tested on Armbian (minimal Debian and Ubuntu 24.04) with mainline kernel Not working: -HDR -Maybe some network services Next up: -Wayland support -Audio visualisers https://github.com/Danibos/mainline-…

I found this amazing page https://linux-sunxi.org/Sunxi-Cedrus#VLC that explains alot on VLC and hardware accelleration but I cannot clearly figure out if my playback is using hardware acceleration. I did follow all the steps to optimize chromium with the ppu sources - chromium doesn't work well yet for me - so not sure if that install worked as expected. My playback of h264 in VLC is super smooth but I have around 20-35% cpu usage (1080p videos) - I know h264 is more demanding than AV1 but someone reported AV1 with 15% CPU usage and 4k. Is there anything I can do to make sure the hardware acceleration is working (aka the VA-API is used)?

I am trying to get the Pi to act as a mouse attached to another machine's USB port. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Are there any USB WiFi adapters that are supported out of the box? Nothing fancy, just looking for a cheap readily available USB WiFi adapter that doesn't require finding kernel headers and downloading modules to compile that will then be wiped out by the next release. I am currently using Armbian_23.02.0-trunk.0220_Orangepi5_jammy_legacy_5.10.110_xfce_desktop.img installed and booting from a 256GB NVME drive. Ethernet is an option but I'd like to make it more portable. What have you guys used and had success with? My network is WiFi 6+ but not having the best speed is just fine. Thanks in advance.

So recently I flashed Orange Pi OS to SD card, booted from there, updated system, firmware and flashed bootloader to SPI flash. I already had an external HDD with Armbian flashed, and tried to boot from there, but no luck. Afterwards, I tried to boot Armbian from SD card, but I can't boot any system that is not Orange Pi OS (and especifically, it needs to be from SD card, can't also boot from USB even in OPi OS). Tried with different SD cards and USB devices, no luck I believe I need to erase SPI flash in order to boot from SD again, but, how can I do it? Used latest OrangePi OS and Armbian Jammy CLI from 23/01 (stable release)

Yeah so just like the title says, has anyone got a tip for a USB Bluetooth dongle that works with the mainline kernel? I got a UGREEN Bluetooth 5.0 dongle a while ago and have just tried again, installing firmware for it. It does get detected as a USB device and the firmware loads. But bluetoothctl never finds it. Gnome doesn't let me 'enable' bluetooth. I'd like to avoid buying a string of these so was just wondering if any are working with mainline? Cheers!

I want to install jellyfin as a docker container on my Orange pi 5. How can I enable hardware acceleration for it? On the container page (https://hub.docker.com/r/linuxserver/jellyfin) there are instructions for various options, but orange pi 5 is not there of course. I have enabled 3D acceleration as mentioned on the armbian page for orange pi 5.

Inspired by Bazzite OS, and remind me of experience on Armbian (not just armbian), basically on Orange PI 5/ OPI5+, it'll be solid OS if update failure/ anything went wrong can rollback to previous safe copy. Pain-point: I just want to use the system, not keep re-flashing OS. nixOS is good, but I don't want to re-learn everything ... and giving up my Ubuntu eco-system. Sorry I'm still testing out, and failing with existing Armbian-Config approach, I'm trying my own appraoch, Iknew the rules here, wait until I success I'll share it here. Hi all, I am trying to recover after a failed NVMe install. I have a working install on an SDCard, but I think my board no longer boots to SDCard, since I flashed the bootloader via armbian-install. I am not sure if my NVMe install is good or not, and I can't currently reflash it. So I think my best bet is to wipe the SPI, which I hope means the board will go back to booting from SDCard. That's question 1 - is that actually a valid solution? If I wipe the SPI will I be able to again boot to SDCard? I am able to get the board into Maskrom mode, and I can see it using the Windows tool. However, I believe that I …

Hello! Does anyone, and by anyone I probably really mean @balbes150 :D, know what I need to do when building official Mesa for it to be recognized in the experimental 6.x kernel environment? There's a panfrost focused dev/staging branch that the panfrost devs are using that I would love to try and be able to build for OPi5 but when I do it I always just get llvm. balbes, you are managing to get the GPU recognized would you be able to share how that's done in the building? I'm not asking for you to provide a build I would just love to know how you do it so I can as well and test the new versions as they happen. This is the branch and commits…

Hello I'm running the NAS on Orange PI 5. I've run Armbian with EDK2 from https://github.com/armbian/build/pull/5900. The system starts from SSD disk connected via PCIE card with 4 SATA ports. I'm trying to use an SPI driven TFT display on the orange pi 5, but I'm stuck on enabling SPI in the first place. Looking at the pinout of the orange pi 5 in its manual, it appears that SPI4...M0 is the only bus broken out to the pins. However, enabling "rk3588-spi4-m0-cs1-spidev" in the armbian-config menu does not seem to do anything, as no /dev/spi device exists after a reboot. Enabling any of the other spi hardware functions seems to work just fine, creating a /dev/spi device as expected, but none of the other spi busses are accessible through the pin header. I'm on Armbian 23.8.1 (image: Armbian_23.8.1_Orangepi5_bookworm_legacy_5.10.160.img). Has anyone used SPI on t…

I have installed the recently released `Desktop images with Armbian Linux v6.10` image (24.8.1, Debian Bookworm, with the Cinnamon desktop) on an OrangePi5 and I'm happy the HDMI support included has finaly enabled the video to my 1080p display. A few days ago I had an issue with a successfully running Armbian installation running from the NVME of my Orange Pi 5 that suddenly developed an issue with nothing being shown on my TV. So after seemingly not being to identify the problem, I started again, wrote the image to an SD card and then moved the installation to the NVME drive using armbian-config utility. So now that I have a set-up that works again, I want to instigate a more belt and braces approach and create an image of the NVME installation using GZIP to compress the image file and decided to use the DD option from terminal. Hi friends, I have one nagging thorn in my side that I just cannot figure out. I need someone who has a 1password account for help with this one. The problem - their desktop app and browser plugin work in tandem -- and it will not synchronize on Armbian for some reason. I've tried everything I can think of - ensuring nothing is downloaded from Flatpak and therefore sandboxed and preventing any connectivity issues. But still not working. If someone can take 5 mins and create a free trial account on 1password, then here are the steps to reproduce: Download the latest arm64 version of 1password Desktop: curl -sSO https://downloads.…

Hello, finally I have time to play with my OPI5, first thing I tried is to install on USB-C, but the port doesn't seem to work. Then I tried to install using USB3 port, on a ssd drive. The armbian-install utility seems to do the job and after installing the bootloader on mtdblock0 I powered off. At reboot everything is like before: if I remove the sd card the systen won't boot. If I boot with the sd card inserted the root partition is on /dev/mmcblk0p2 First thing that came into my mind is to mount SPI and check if bootloader is ok, but I'm unable to mount it: ~# mount /dev/mtdblock0 /mnt/spi mount: /mnt/spi: wrong fs type, bad optio…

Since I re-installed 23.8 Jammy with the extra ppa:liujianfeng1994 repo - I haven't been able to play any videos on my OPI5. All players I tried seem to have kernel issues decoding any h264. I've narrowed down the error message to a 4Gb memory limit with the selected version of the drivers but I was wondering if anyone had luck with playback. I had better luck with Jammy 23.4 and I regret upgrading. What is the recommendation? Should I try nightly with 6.6.0-rc1 kernel? I assume this one doesn't need panfork drivers anymore or are there other recommendations for h264 playback?

I updated to Armbian 26.2.1 on OPi5, and it can't boot from MTD (rootfs at NVMe), and I have to use SD card to boot to NVMe as workaround. After looking into this issue, I found rkspi_loader.img is no longer available for current (6.18.8 kernel) u-boot pkg and armbian-config flashes u-boot-rockchip-spi.bin ( or similar sata version) to /dev/mtdblock0 and I think this is wrong image for MTD bootloader. If I use older vendor image, which u-boot pkg has rkspi_loader.img, system can boot to NVMe rootfs and I notice that /dev/mtdblock0 has several gpt partitions including u-boot one, and flashing u-boot-rockchip-spi.bin erases partitions in SPI flash. I…

I hear xfs is better for copying large file sizes. my casual use is downloading movies, and watching it on jellyfin. or maybe I'm just using ext4?

I tried installing the OS using SD card and EMMC, but both failed. Orange Pi OS (Arch) on the official website ran normally. However, I installed focal_desktop_xfce or jammy_desktop_gnome from Ubuntu Image, but they all failed. After inserting the image into the SD card, the symptom is a black screen and no booting. Does it only support SSD? Because it is entered through a translator, there may be unnatural sentences. If you reply about that, I will get back to you.

The OPI5 has an onboard RTC. On the back of the board near the RTC chip there are two pcb "test points". One says RTC1, the other says GRD1, I would assume a CR2032 could be connected to those points to maintain RTC function. I don't dare do anything till I get a solid answer. Can anyone give me any feedback as to options.

I did a bit of reading - to prevent ubuntu packages to update the rockchip optimized packages, you need to pin the packages. There is a simple way to do that. 1. Create a file called rockchip-multimedia-ppu in /etc/apt/preferences.d with Package: * Pin: release o=LP-PPA-liujianfeng1994-rockchip-multimedia Pin-Priority: 600 2. Create a file called panfork-mesa-ppu in /etc/apt/preferences.d with Package: * Pin: release o=LP-PPA-liujianfeng1994-liujianfeng1994-panfork-mesa Pin-Priority: 600 You can verify that the apt configuration is working correctly with sudo apt policy chromium-browser which should return chrom…

I'm looking to try an OPi5 for GPGPU. After seeing trunk recently added the patches needed to use the "gofaster" option for panfork, and having seen reports of glmark2 scores of 4000 and 5000 while never coming close to that myself, I decided to pull together the various bits of info out there and just try all of the options. A number of things done below are often described vaguely -- hopefully it's helpful here to lay out a concrete set of steps to follow and what to expect. There are two options for accelerated video: panfork and ARM's closed source "blob" driver. With either option, it sounds like you should switch from X11 to Wayland. If you are looking a…

Hello, I am running Armbian 23.05 "minimal" (with the provided kernel 5.10.110) on my OrangePI 5 4GB. Upgraded all packets to latest. When trying to run GeekBench 5.5.1 ARM Preview, it reboots when approaching the end of multicore tests, with "performance" governor and default speed range (0.4 - 2.4 GHz for A76). Same goes if I drop the max clock speed to 2.2 for A76. After dropping to 2.0 GHz max, it runs fine; but this hurts performances quite a bit. I tried various power sources, including a bench PSU which can reliably supply up to 30A (but I only see a few spikes over 2A). The board has a large heatsink installed wit…

booted opi5 via nvme one day and the boot screen mentions about btrfs partition missing even tho it was using ext4 partition. booted via sdcard and the root partition is entirely missing on the nvme. the boot partition is still there and working. not sure if relevant but the previous time i shut the opi5 down, i forgot to unplug it and it was plugged in for about an hour after shutdown with the red led and fan on. the nvme is kingspec which while cheap doesnt seem to have that many bad reports online that i can find (the boot partition was fine so i suspect kingspec isnt at fault). the power adapter is a 25w phone charger w/ pd/qs; it hasnt exhibited any weird behavior (l…
