I have an Orange Pi 5 board, installed with the 25.8 Debian Bookworm + Cinnamon desktop system. I have switched (using armbian-config) to the edge kernel in order to test the HDMI audio support in the new Linux kernel, but I'm not getting any audio out. The ALSA HDMI card seems to be present (see below), but there's no sound using speaker-test or aplay. I have enabled the hdmirx overlay through armbian-config also, but the result is the same. Is there anything extra that should be configured in order to get audio output ? Output from armbianmonitor - https://paste.armbian.com/gegorimako

hi there, I'm a complete Linux noob so please forgive my ignorance. But I do have 25+ years experience in IT so am relatively conversant with basic principles - so please be patient I did try to search for any previous threads but couldn't find any. I'm trying to setup a RADXA Rock 5 ITX with OpenMediaVault for my NAS. I have a 2TB NVMe m.2 SSD that I'll use for the OS. For the NAS storage I'm using 4x Western Digital 16TB SATA III drives. I downloaded the Armbian 25.2.2 bootable image from https://www.armbian.com/radxa-rock-5-itx/ and used Balena Etcher (the legit version from Balena-io) to make my bootable microSD card. …

hello guys, i ve been lately working with nanopi-r5s which comes with a default openwrt os installed on EMMC. but i prefer working on the armbian images. that is why i installed debian 12 bookworm from https://www.armbian.com/nanopi-r5s/ anyway, r5s refuses to boot from sd card for no matter what. until i corrupted the emmc by mistake(i started flashing a default image to emmc but then took the power off before it is done). so now it boots from sd card. but now when m trying to install the image from sd card to emmc through armbian-install. it only shows option 5 and 6. as if it can not detect the emmc. so what m trying to figure o…

I understand that panthor is not supported for wayland but in that case I would expect libmali to fill in... but I ended up with lvmpipe. The overlay along with another recent post led me to believe that panthor was the expected default and libmali was an artifact, but I'm now questioning that after finding a thread identifying use cases where libmali can be preferred and a comment suggesting panthor wouldn't be available until 6.13. As a result, I am now questioning if there is a reason that software acceleration is the default and the user is expected to determine which path they want to go? I know support for the hardware has been slow going so I …

I'm really struggling to get chromium to work correctly with hardware acceleration. 1) I have custom kernel image from master branch last week. Which maybe could cause some issues? 2) I added the two repos (panfork and mesa) sudo add-apt-repository ppa:liujianfeng1994/panfork-mesa sudo add-apt-repository ppa:liujianfeng1994/rockchip-multimedia 3) I've ran all the updates 4) I installed ubuntu desktop to enable Wayland which is working nicely 5) I've added the HDMI audio output 6) My default chromium configuration does already have the egl enabled. When I start Chromium, I get the following errors 39610:39643:0125/091804.694008:ERR…

Hello all, First of all, thanks for the Armbian project, love it so far, but had a slight problem with a kernel upgrade. To be honest, I forgot how I installed Armbian since it was a while ago, but I've been using this for a year or so. I saw that unattended-upgrades installed a new kernel and I should reboot for this change. I was a bit apprehensive, but went ahead and rebooted. The NanoPI R4S didn't come back up. I attached a serial console to debug. The console showed that the initramfs was read successfully from the SD card, but then tried to mount to root filesystem by UUID and failed (it kept saying it tried to run /boot/local-block and event…

I'm looking to try an OPi5 for GPGPU. After seeing trunk recently added the patches needed to use the "gofaster" option for panfork, and having seen reports of glmark2 scores of 4000 and 5000 while never coming close to that myself, I decided to pull together the various bits of info out there and just try all of the options. A number of things done below are often described vaguely -- hopefully it's helpful here to lay out a concrete set of steps to follow and what to expect. There are two options for accelerated video: panfork and ARM's closed source "blob" driver. With either option, it sounds like you should switch from X11 to Wayland. If you are looking a…

Hello everyone, This is my 1st post on the forum. My intention with this post is not to report a specific issue that I am running into, but more because I would like to collect info and suggestions from people with more experience than myself. I've recently received an Orange Pi 5 Plus and have spent a bit of time exploring operating systems suitable for this system and have settled on the Armbian solution. I'm a HW designer by trade, and have done some SW work, but I do not consider myself proficient in SW at all. I find my way around things, but that's about as far as it goes.... For the my planned use of the OPi5+, I will need eMMC b…

The other is https://forum.armbian.com/topic/12936-how-to-control-fan-on-rockpro64 @deathisunknown Which kernel are you using? 5.3.xxx? Until this week end, I was using Ayufan's kernel in order to have ats working (I have the nas box with a harddrive so I want to have some ventilation). I've switched to Armbian's current kernel (5.3.xxx, I don't remember the exact subversion) and noticed that the fan would not spin. Then I tried Armbian's dev kernel (5.4.0-rc1) and my fan works fine. I stumbled upon this thread in the mean time, but since as I remember the lates…

Hello. I downloaded Armbian 22.05 Jammy XFCE for Desktop. When I boot up my Orange Pi 4 LTS everything looks good. The second problem (and the main problem) was a display - when X start, my display turn off (I have HDMI-connection). What I am doing wrong?

Hi guys, First post here, I successfully managed to flash and boot Armbian 25.8.2 (Bookworm Minimal) from an SD card. Everything was working great, HDMI output and network included. I then ran “sudo armbian-install” and selected Option 4 to move the system to my NVMe SSD and make it boot from there. The process itself completed without errors. However, after shutting down and removing the SD card and powering on again the system doesn’t boot. I have the red LED turned on however the green LED that was previously flickering doesn’t turn on. There’s also no HDMI output and the board doesn’t connect to the network. I tried ins…

I've re created the sd card a few times and also used another sd card because i was thinking something was wrong with the card. The board turn on but i got only the red led, and is stable. On several RockPro64 boards I experience infrequent freezes, mostly directly on boot, but also after some longer (hours, days) uptime. I use the official power adapter and no additional hardware except a PCIe adapter for an SSD, which works flawlessly when operational. When looking at the kern.log, there are quite a few errors and warnings, but comparing to a successful boot these are all also present. So I don't think they cause the freeze directly. Currently, I recorded the freeze on the latest Armbian Bionic as release just recently. FWIW, I think the same issue also occurs on the previous Debian Stretch image (had various freezes, but have not …

Hello, I'm observing a strange behavior. If I connect the Tinkerboard to HDMI, it won't start. Only the red led LED lights up. Yellow and green did not light up. The Tinkerboard ist connected to a NorthPada 5V 3A Micro USB Charger power supply. I measured the supply voltage with 5.3V and checked with an oscilloscope if there are voltage dips. But the voltage was stable. I did a cross test. I unplugged the HDMI cable and started the Tinkerboard. The Tinkerboard starts and the yellow and green LEDs lights up. I measured the supply voltage with 5.3V and checked with an oscilloscope if there a voltage dips. The voltage was stable and dropped to roughly 5.1V for a short ti…

Anyone who typically updates on nightly kernels I would recommend freezing and not updating until we clear up some issues gifted us by some large amount of upstream changes that broke well, pretty much everything. Hi. I have RockPi E v1.21 and I found, that I'm not able to boot image with new kernel 6.12 (tried minimal images 25.2.1 and 24.11.1, USBImager and Balena Etcher, 3 SD cards, different power supplies). With image 24.8.3 it boots normally. Also I found, that after upgrading 24.8.3 to kernel 6.12 the RockPi boots, but Ethernet doesn't work (even LEDs are dead). Another thing which I notice is, that I didn't find any option to disable kernel upgrades, but what I googled, it should be present in armbian-config->system->kernel->Y203. Does anyone know how this compares with the current armbian release with vendor kernel? Are all the fixes from that release integrated in armbian or does it go the other way?

I've got jammy running but I have a dsi display for the board and I'd like that to work (well the tp port too) with jammy. Looking at armbian config I see no setting for it. I know the display works fine as if I load an aryufan android image it works as it is set to use DSI by default. Does this kernel know about the DSI port? Do I have to build a custom kernel? If not then what boot env line will get it going?

I have an interesting discovery that smells suspiciously like a kernel bug. I find it easiest to see this bug by running btop which shows a historical per core cpu usage graph so it's easy to see when one stops being used. You can see the same thing in ordinary top but it's less easy to see than with btop. I have a Radxa Rock 5B with an RK3588 chip that I have been stress testing to make sure the hardware is OK before I start to use it in anger. As part of that I ran `openssl speed -multi 8` to spin up 8 threads using 100% cpu each. On all other machines that I've ever done that with it runs all X cores at 100% until it runs out of tests or is Ctrl-C'ed. Watch…

Hi, I read everything I could possibly find on the DP-Alt mode for the RockPro64 and came to the conclusion that no Distro is offering that right now. However, the Pinebook Pro seems to have support via a Kernel Patch. Can the Pinebook Pro Kernel be installed on the RockPro64? Is there a repository for Armbian Kernels? Thanks very much.

I try to understand the usage of Tinkerboard for Industrial Application usage, we have below questions. 1. Operating temperature is between 0-60 C [as many Industrial PLCs recommend 0-55 C only] 2. Long Term Supply of the Boards 3. Bulk Quantities buying [Get 30 to 50 boards in 2-4 weeks notice] The board and quality seems top notice, RPI interface is good for our use cases, anyone sees a risk in above points or would like to suggest something? We are looking a good sized community, Ubuntu OS, much stable and better performing board compared to Raspberry PI, all seems good with Tinkerboard. Please share your idea…

Is there a list of Armbian Kernels that include EMMC support? I've tried the vendor kernel build 6.1.99, the LTS 6.12.21, and Bleeding Edge 6.14.0 to find they all lack the mmcblk0 under /dev/ , and lack overlays for it under /boot/dtb/rockchip/overlays/. I have wiped SPI and SPNOR without success.

Hi there. I just got my hands on a brand new 5T with 24GB of RAM and installed Armbian 26.04 minimal on it (on an SD card - no eMMC on this board). I immediately put it to use running CI jobs, however started seeing segfaults and things almost straight away. Current power source is the Radxa 60W power supply. Currently passively cooled (with the Radxa heat sink). Hasn't gone over 70º in the last 24 hours, even when maxxed out compiling rust packages. I know this sounds strange, but I cannot get any of the images to boot. I have an R3S non-LTS + SD card. It works well with the stock images from FriendlyElec, but none of the Armbian images I tried will boot. I tried different tools to write the SD (BalenaEtcher, USBImager, Rufus), but nothing changed. When I tried to read the SD card with Armbian on my x86 laptop running Debian, the system didn’t recognize any proper partitions (maybe that’s normal, maybe not—I don’t know). But when I write an Armbian image for Allwinner NanoPi, the partitions are detected correctly. And finally, I can’t connect to the debug UART, so I can’t get any logs. I feel…

Hello, I've recently bought a rock 5B plus. I have a brand new crucial P310 nvme 1TB with the goal to boot from it. As the title says, sometimes the nvme drive is properly detected, sometimes not. (Everytime the controller is visible in lspci, but only sometimes shows in lsblk). When the drive is properly detected, I can write to it and it works fine, without issues. I've noticed that it is more likely to be detected on a cold boot (ie. if I turn off the power and come back the next day, the first time it will probably show up). I have the official radxa 65w PD power adapter (although I've also tried a lot more during the proc…

Hello, I have installed the Armbian 26.2 minimal IOT image based on Debian 13 Trixie - with the 6.18.x kernel - and I noticed the USB2 port (the single, vertical port next to the Ethernet port) is not working. Is this a limitation of the mainstream kernel (6.18.x) - i.e. does this work only with the vendor kernel (6.1.x) ? NB: I upgraded to 6.19 using the 'edge' kernel, but I'm seeing the same behavior. Here's the armbianmonitor outpur - https://paste.armbian.com/raw/udefojuxuk

Good afternoon everyone. Please help me with my problem. I have a Radha board zero 3w and I use the Armbian distrib. 24.8.1 . Everything works fine, except that I can't activate SPI. In the Armbian-config menu there is no hardware section (I tried different flash cards and Armbian versions, the problem persists), I also tried to edit the armbianEnv.txt and add overlays there, but I also did not have success. Tell me what else I can try. Activation works on the native distribution radxa debian.

Hi I was struggling to find the right package for my Tinkerboard. I needed a reasonably powerful 24x7 appliance that could provide torrent downloading, wifi hotspot, a shared network drive and a LMS box. After trying out the Asus effort and DietPi - both with severe issues) I landed on Armbian and it seems to have everything going for it but the LMS install just does not work. I am a Linux newbie, I know my way around Windows and a GUI, and used the instructions here and a few other places to successfully set up the hotspot and the sharing and automounting of large USB drives. It took me the better part of 6 hours just to figure all of that out (j…

Hi! I am looking into OdroidM1 network performance with kernel 6.6.47-current-rockchip64 ( 24.8.1 ) For some reason network performance is x10 faster (upstream) in bookworm and noble, when compared to jammy. Downstream performance is fine, delivering the same performance in jammy and the other distributions. Since all of them are using the same kernel, I assume that there must be some configuration that jammy is missing, or? Any idea about what could be going on?

I have an Orange Pi 5 (16GB RAM) running Armbian Jammy with the latest updates installed. I am booting from NVMe and when it boots successfully it runs flawlessly without issue. The problem occurs when I reboot -- the majority of the time it does not boot up successfully. Sometimes when it boots I only see the red light (and no green light), and other times I will see the green light flash like normal, yet the external hard drive does not spin up or mount properly. This results in me needing to power down the Orange Pi 5 and try again. Eventually it will boot up successfully (along with the external HDD) and then everything is good; that is, until the next time I have to …

This is a last-ditch effort to figure out how we can continue to build our project on top of Armbian. Goal We are building an appliance on the RockPro64 board, with eMMC and an PCIe SSD attached, using a custom-built Armbian Ubuntu 18.04 image with extensive post-configuration (packages, appliacations, overlayroot...) within the boot process. The image is then processed by Mender to create a true dual-root filesystem over-the-air update system with fallback (we invested a lot of resources to extend Mender for Armbian and RockPro64). This build process works perfectly and is exactly what we need. Issue The reliability, however, is bad. In …

I am considering to buy a RK3399 dev board and use USB 3.0 peripheral mode to transfer data to/from another host PC. It may be used as USB CDC/Eth or RNDIS device, or a MTP device. We hope the transfer rate could be well over 1Gbps, the higher, the better. So has anybody ever benchmarked RK3399 USB in peripheral mode? Such as the highest iperf transfer rate in CDC/Eth or RNDIS mode?

Hello again, We're already aware of the existing issues with kernel 6 and the audio on the RK3308B. In this case, it fails again in the latest versions... Alsamixer detects the audio card and even shows it in arecord -L or arecord -l, but when trying to record, the error appears: "arecord: set_params:1416: unable to install hw params" The command applied is: arecord -c 2 -r 192000 -f S32_LE test.wav Although if I leave it without parameters to see what it does, it throws the same error, even if I specify the hardware... In the previous kernel (I think it was 6.12.11 (with the u-boot issue in the previous post), the audio worked per…

Hi guys, I got a SPIdev overlay to work on the rock S0, figured I'd just share it here for the record, since I could have used this info myself (I spent days trying to figure it out since I had no experience with device trees or whatnot). Basically, download the attached .dts file, then run sudo armbian-add-overlay rk3308-spi2-spidev.dts I also edited /boot/armbianEnv.txt and added this line, but I'm unsure if that's actually necessary? param_spidev_spi_bus=2 This worked on Armbian 24.5.1 Noble, creating /dev/spidev2.0. You can verify that it works using this tool: https://github.com/rm-hull/spidev-test The dts file is based on this one…

I'm using Armbian on a Tinker Board S. I did the installation back when the 4.4 kernel was still the default one. I expected that I'd get the newer 4.19 kernel by using 'apt update && apt dist-upgrade' at some point as it would become the new stable. This does not seem to be the case however, as I see the new downloads use 4.19 by default, but the stable package still points to a 4.4 kernel. Is it recommended to just move up by installing the kernel package with the next suffix or are there still reasons to wait with upgrading?

Hey, I’m running armbian on a tinkerboard and I need to connect to a CAN-bus. Apparently the usual Linux CAN-kernel-modules aren’t shipped with armbian, so I guess I’ll have to add them manually somehow. I`ve been trying to do that for two days now without any luck. I’ve been trying to follow the steps described in other forums, but it haven’t helped. I really just want to add the necessary modules to my existing kernel. Any ideas?

Hi. I installed Armbian_20.02.1_Tinkerboard_bionic_current_5.4.20_desktop on my TinkerBoard (not S) and get weird screen state (white, then growing black circle in the middle). I tried Armbian_20.02.1_Tinkerboard_bionic_legacy_4.4.213_desktop and it works very good, but I still want to test vulkan driver, so I updated only kernel to 4.19 (install linux-image-next-rockchip, linux-header-next-rockchip, linux-dtb-next-rockchip and delete 3 old packages). Has anybody seen this message at boot: [ 5.352826] CPU4: failed to come online [ 5.352835] CPU4: failed in unknown state : 0x0 [ 10.481328] CPU5: failed to come online [ 10.481336] CPU5: failed in unknown state : 0x0 Then, the A72 cores don't show up (unsurprisingly since these are the two cores that somehow did not come online). On top of that, the kernel throws a backtrace (related to sound if I understand correctly): ------------[ cut here ]------------ [ 13.014782] WARNING: CPU: 3 PID: 1 at kernel/irq/manage.c:1990 request_threaded_irq+0x144/0x180 [ 13.014784] Modules linked in: [ 13.014793] CPU: 3 PID: 1 Comm: swapper…

Hi, I have had some issues trying to boot from eMMC with the last version of Armbian (kernel v5.4) while it's working perfectly on Armbian with a v4.4 kernel. Images not working: https://dl.armbian.com/rockpro64/archive/Armbian_20.05.2_Rockpro64_bionic_current_5.4.43.img.xz https://dl.armbian.com/rockpro64/archive/Armbian_20.05.4_Rockpro64_focal_current_5.4.46.img.xz Working image: https://dl.armbian.com/_old/rockpro64/archive/Armbian_5.98_Rockpro64_Debian_buster_default_4.4.192.7z I though I messed up with the SPI or the eMMC card but after trying all I could, it finally worked using an old version of Armbian…

Unfortunately, there seems not yet to be an area in this forum for NanoPi R6C/S, so here we go ... Here is the default Armbian /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", KERNELS=="fe1c0000.ethernet", NAME:="wan" SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="r8169", KERNELS=="0003:31:00.0", NAME:="lan1" SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="r8169", KERNELS=="0004:41:00.0", NAME:="lan2" This does not match up with the labels on the case! Here is the correct config we have updated and tested on a NanoPi R6S at Afritic Group: SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*"…

When the ODROID-M1 is setup to boot from SPI with the system installed on a M2 ssd, power loss seems to lead to an unbootable system. Once an SD card with armbian is inserted and the system is booted through the recovery button once, logged in* and then shutdown normally, the system boots again from SPI. * Without login and regular shutdown of the system booted from sd card, the issue remains I have observed and reproduced this issue several times in the last year. In my case the M1 is connected to a power strip that turns on and off the multiple devices. When I forget to unplug the M1 and it gets turned on and off several times over a day …
