Just got my Tinker Board S in... used Etcher to flash the following image to the eMMC: Armbian Stretch mainline kernel 4.14.y It won't boot. That same image flashed to the SD card boots just fine. I've tried using the armbian-config to install it to the eMMC that way; however, all I get are "There are no targets. Please check your drives." What the heck am I doin' wrong? New to the entire SBC realm, and got this instead of the Pi. I don't want a desktop distro installed... just a simple distro w/ bash. Any help would be appreciated... spent the last 6 hours trying to figure this out. This isn't the 'tinkering' I had in mind when I got this thing.…

I'm using an Orange Pi 5 Plus 16GB SBC, with Armbian image (https://dl.armbian.com/orangepi5-plus/Bookworm_current_cinnamon-backported-mesa) which uses Kernel 6.12. I am trying to get a BME280 I2C sensor attached to the following pins of the 40 pins; 1 (3.3v), 3 (GPIO0C0), 5 (GPIO0B7), and 6 (GND). The BME280 sensor has the VIN wired to 3.3v (pin 1), SDA wired to SDA (pin 3), SCL wired to SCL (pin 5), and GND to GND (pin 6). The device should use address 0x76, but isn't listed under the four I2C buses found in /dev. This configuration worked fine when using the stock OrangePi 5 Plus Debian Bookworm image, but does not have I2C2 listed as a device under /dev un…

Hello, I have 2 questions. 1. How long does the support for the tinkerboard takes. Because I'm using the Board as Server and i don't need much CPU Power but I don't like to buy every 2-4 years a new board because the support ended. The reason of this question is, the odroid c1, there is no stretch image for this board. 2. Is there a good howto, how to build a kernel on a thinkerboard with own config? Reason for this question is, I have installed the latest armbian stretch server image on my tinker board and the kernel has no ebtables support. Second Reason ist question 1, build a own Kernel and update to Debian 10,11, ...., n.

Hi, I recently got my hands on a used unit of those, quite faster than my old SBC! Only issue I currently have is that I can't seem to get audio output on the 3.5mm jack. (Well the other issue is unrelated .. ) Anyone have an idea on what I should be hunting? I did the obvious cable, etc.. checks. There's always the possibility that it's damaged, hell if I know. Armbian 25.2.1 6.1 kernel KDE Neon (Why use a beta version btw? just wondering) Thanks! DW.

Just posting my experiences getting armbian going on pinebook pro. I had a pinebook pro on a shelf for a while, picked it up and ran "apt-get update" after which booting the system broke. So without anything important on there i figured i would reinstall. Tow Boot I had already installed an older version of Tow Boot, but i updated it to 2023.07-007 This is a simple process. Write out the spi.installer.img to an sd card (i used dd). Insert the sd card in to the slot on the side of the pinebook. Start the system. Follow the prompts. Shut down the system. Remove the sd card. Power on the system and hit "Esc" to see the Tow Boot menus and …

In order to review the Tinker Board boot logs via serial console, I set up armbianEnv.txt to get the logs. But Armbian didn't output anything. Can anyone tell me what is wrong? As long as I reviewed boot.cmd, the serial port was assigned to /dev/ttyS2. So I used UART2 GPIO pins (GP7C7 for TX, GP7C6 for RX) to interact. (snip) if test "${console}" = "serial" || test "${console}" = "both"; then setenv consoleargs "console=ttyS2,115200n8 ${consoleargs}"; fi (snip) The barudrate is 115200. Of course, I re-checked my connection between USB-UART serial cable and UART2 GPIO pins (USB-UART RX to GP7C7TX, USB-UART TX to GP7C6 RX). Any infor…

I have set up Armbian 24.8.4 bookworm on my 32GB Orange Pi 5 Plus. Most everything works as expected out of the box. The second HDMI port doesn't detect the second screen, and the screen displays No Signal. I have tested the cables and monitors to ensure they are functioning. I have also ensured I wasn't plugged into the HDMI input by accident. I was about ready to proclaim it a hardware issue, but on booting the "Official" Orange PiOS Arch image, the dual monitor support worked as expected. I checked the dtb file included with the Arch image, and it has many references to HDMI0 and HDMI1 devices, while the one used by default with the Armbian ima…

I thought it would be easy, but I am now turning in circles, so I am asking here. I have a working system booting on NVME (when no SD card inserted), with two partitions nvme0p1 (256Mb) and nvmeop2 (40Gb) I would like to clone my working system on a SD card. How shall I proceed? I am not asking details instruction, only the rough path I should follow (e.g. dd partitions, tune2fs ......). PS: I thought it would be easy, but whatever I do, the system keep taking /boot on the nvmeop1, so I really struggle to boot on the /boot of the SD card

Hello all! I have a radxa rock 5b (8GB, not the plus version) and am running armbian (bookworm) on it. The kernel version (uname -r) reports as 6.12.32-current-rockchip64. By and large almost everything seems to be working - video playback in VLC is fine, 3d acceleration is working (I get around 58-60fps in the game 'torcs' as an example). The only thing I can't seem to get working (and can't find much about it) is the hdmi input. I see some five devices listed in dev (from /dev/video0 to /dev/video4) although none of these seem to relate to the hdmi input. Does the hdmi input work on the 5b under armbian at all? thanks …

I am working with a Rock Pi S v1.3 and thus far the only image I have been able to get to boot is Armbian 21.05.9 Focal with Linux 4.4.247-rockpis. I have tried the recent Arabian Bookworm, Armbian Jammy and a few other variations I have come across on various forum posts here. With the above working image I can communicate with it via UART and get to the terminal. With everything else I don't even get the blinking blue LED; just two solid green LEDs. I have a few of these boards and have confirmed this issue across all of them. I am not sure what next steps to take so any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in ad…

Hi all! I am entirely new to Armbian. I see Radxa's Rock5B RK3588 based SBC is suppored and its Armbian page is https://www.armbian.com/rock-5b/ . Can you give me a small crash course on your experience with Armbian on the Radxa Rock5B? If you have an idea of any of the points I raise below, please share. 1. Super stable? Generally to use and to upgrade Armbian, how stable has it been to you? 2. Which image should I pick? I see both Debian and Ubunto are offered. I'll pick Debian. Then there are "Desktop", "Server" and "Minimal/IOT"and "Dedicated applications" images, and some are listed …

I logged an issue a little while ago with Armbian running on the Tinkerboard that the screen when rotated 90 degrees couldn't draw the screen at any speed. I have been playing with a few alternatives incl going back to the original tinkeros. All have issues so I was delighted to see the FOCAL port. I am using the recommended Waveshare 7" touchscreen that you advertise on the home page as tested 3rd party hardware. Both the desktop and the server versions of Focal come up with the error Configure crtc 0 failed setting mode when I manually set the supported resolution of 1024 x 600 at 60Hz using xrandr Exactly the same settings on TinkerOS works perfectl…

Hi there, I've been trying to enable g_ether and USB OTG on my Orange PI 5+. I've tried things like editing /boot/orangepiEnv.txt and adding module-load dwc2,g_ether. However, I don't get any usb0 interface pop up which indicates to me that the USB/OTG mode is not set to peripheral on the settings. I'm not sure how to go about it? Would anyone be able to advise? I want to use the power port for also Ethernet.

Hi I was wondering of status of vanilla kernel and linux for ROC-RK3328-CC. I read an article about it being mainlined in 4.17 (http://bbs.t-firefly.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=2312) but I still see people working through issues on this board. I am mainly interested on ethernet and USB3 support. Not interested in video or sound, although others might. Thought this is the place to ask as there is a lot going on but difficult to scrape all the info on the threads. Thanks!

I installed latest vendor image and because of the wifi issues I switched to the edge kernel. I messed up my fstab, couldn't connect with ssh, so I plugged it to my monitor and a keyboard, but there was no video. Eventually, I fixed it by booting vendor image from my sd card, but I got curious. I know, that vendor image just works, so I flashed edge image to my sd card to see what's wrong. The monitor recognizes the presence of the board, but it's just a black screen. I can ssh to the board, so the image definitely booted, but there's just no video. Here's the log from my original installation. I kept 6.8 kernel because the video is not important to me.

Hello people, I use a Tinker Board as a low power desktop computer for browsing, office documents and general tinkering, and after all this time it got personalized enough to worry about loosing all this setup and it is a hassle to just overwrite everything every time a new image comes around. Was wondering if it is possible to use apt dist-upgrade as means to get from Bionic Desktop 5.4 to Focal Desktop 5.4 as can be done on x86 platforms without breaking everything?

As https://www.armbian.com/tinkerboard/ has a quite fresh 4.14 Linux kernel (in Armbian Stretch Next Desktop 5.50) I am trying to use that instead of the standard TinkerOS 2.0.7 with a 4.4.103 kernel. However, Armbian is configured to provide only spidev2.0, while TinkerOS can have spidev0.0, spidev0.1, spidev2.0 and spidev2.1 all enabled at the same time as long as you disable UART4 which shares GPIO header pins with SPI0. In the TinkerOS case, there is a config tool which edits a small and straightforward text file in /boot/ containing lines such as "intf:spi0=on" or "intf:uart4=off". The corresponding Armbian file seems to be /boot/armbianEnv.txt - possibly…

Hi, does anyone know how to get hardware video acceleration on orange 4 lts? I've looked around and I saw that rk3399's multimedia support can be enabled using the rk3399 legacy multimedia framework. But that requires a legacy buster image, which doesn't exist for the orange pi. I've tried to compile it myself, but it seems the compile script won't allow it. Is it really impossible to compile a legacy kernel for orange pi 4 lts?

Hello again, We're already aware of the existing issues with kernel 6 and the audio on the RK3308B. In this case, it fails again in the latest versions... Alsamixer detects the audio card and even shows it in arecord -L or arecord -l, but when trying to record, the error appears: "arecord: set_params:1416: unable to install hw params" The command applied is: arecord -c 2 -r 192000 -f S32_LE test.wav Although if I leave it without parameters to see what it does, it throws the same error, even if I specify the hardware... Hi there, Just got Orange Pi 5 8GB and have no idea where to begin. I have a microSD card available, but no writer. I had the idea to boot from USB thumbstick and then write the SD card using the port on the Orange Pi 5, then I can boot from SD card. Is this possible? What image and method do I need to follow in order to boot from a simple 32GB USB Sandisk thumbstick? Thank you!

Hi, I am looking for owners of RK3288 who can help to find missing information in the system. A lot already works from the template. Vcore has been added thanks to @TonyMac32 , but some important information like RAM frequency (dynamic.5.name=dram_frequency) is still missing. This is my adjusted version, but to do some more HW testing we need as much information about the board as possible. Hi! I am looking into OdroidM1 network performance with kernel 6.6.47-current-rockchip64 ( 24.8.1 ) For some reason network performance is x10 faster (upstream) in bookworm and noble, when compared to jammy. Downstream performance is fine, delivering the same performance in jammy and the other distributions. Since all of them are using the same kernel, I assume that there must be some configuration that jammy is missing, or? Any idea about what could be going on?

Sorry, don't have the Armbianmonitor info handy but wanted to get this started... I'm trying to bring up a Libre Renegade RK3328-CC for use as a media center. Armbian's performance is absolutely wonderful compared to the other builds I've tried on this box. Unfortunately, I want the HDMI output going to a Samsung Frame TV, and resolution negotiation fails badly -- I get obvious rasters with black between them, nowhere near the 4K that this TV model is capable of and not even a smooth conversion (Note that the eyes here suggests that the black line is occurring every third raster or something like that...) What information I have gathered so far: …

It's been a while since I used Armbian. I have tons of ARM SBCs from a few years back because I think they're fascinating but they either wind up being too slow or just not worth using it for whatever since x86 "SBC like" boards exist and are pretty cheap. Fast forward to now and I'm doing some touchscreen development and just because of how I have things setup I needed 3 things, I2C, Interrupt capable GPIO and an actual DisplayPort. That combination of things is surprisingly hard to find. I had a couple of things on hand, (Seeed Odyssey x86, Odroid H2/H3, Rpi's, Nvidia Jetson Nano). I spent way more time than I should have trying to make each of these work, i…

The only 2020.07 combo I've gotten to boot is the Tinker with the non-eMMC supporting u-boot. As for clues, I haven't found any, the u-boot source code is of course very well organized for debugging purposes . If anyone has an idea about what could be going on with this let me know, I'm shelving the effort to think about other stuff.

I just recently bought a sim5320a GSM/GPS cape for my Tinkerboard S and it requires the use of ttyS3; however, by default Armbian uses this port for console... so I'm unable to use it w/ the cape. So, if you use the mainline DTSI files, you'll encounter an issue when loading the Mali Midgard GPL kernel module, since the main ARM kernel maintainers changed how the "compatible" properties of Midgard GPU nodes should be defined. Don't ask me why, they created an entire documentation stating that now the Mali Midgard GPU nodes have to harbour the chip series number, a vendor-specific statement, and drop the "arm,mali-midgard" property. The additions are nice, since they allow a quick detection of the chip number and the chip vendor using /sys nodes names. However, turns out that the Mali kernel driver used the dropped property to detect the GPU. So, I've …

However, there is no way to ping any URLs. Disconnecting/reconnecting network does not fix the issue. The only fix was reboot. How can I troubleshoot this issue? I'd like some help please. The ethernet device naming seems inconsistent. Sometimes one interface comes up as eth0 and sometimes as eth1, and sometimes not at all. The enp1s0 interface seems to reliably come up, but not with the right config (sometimes it uses the config for enp1s0 and sometimes for eth0). I am trying to assign status IP addresses (on different networks) to each interface, but because of the unreliable bringup of the network interfaces, I can't get a config that starts up correctly and consistency on reboots or cold boots. I found this amazing page https://linux-sunxi.org/Sunxi-Cedrus#VLC that explains alot on VLC and hardware accelleration but I cannot clearly figure out if my playback is using hardware acceleration. I did follow all the steps to optimize chromium with the ppu sources - chromium doesn't work well yet for me - so not sure if that install worked as expected. My playback of h264 in VLC is super smooth but I have around 20-35% cpu usage (1080p videos) - I know h264 is more demanding than AV1 but someone reported AV1 with 15% CPU usage and 4k. Is there anything I can do to make sure the hardware acceleration is working (aka the VA-API is used)?

I want to share some information about an issue that I see on my OPi5+. Since I got it I am messing around with it and everything works great so far with the edge 6.7 kernel. One thing I noticed though was, that right after installation with nothing connected and when idle, there was one kernel process that was constantly consuming around 10% CPU time and the load stays at 1. The process was irq/136-hym8563. The number varies of course after each boot. Kernel driver is rtc_hym8563. Since it is build into the kernel I was not able to unload it as a first test. Side node, the issue is not seen on the Rock5b, so it seems OPi5+ hardware specific. Even if bot…

Hello, I'm planning on running a k3s cluster with Rook storage with a few of the Orange Pi 5 that I got. A prerequisite for rook however is RBD module. I've been able to recompile the kernel including RBD support, however I've been unable to get the device to boot from the new kernel. Rebooting after kernel has been built and installed still reports Linux 5.10.110-rockchip-rk3588. Any help would be appreciated. I have been pulling my hair out trying to get the acceleration performance (smooth 4K video playback in mpv / chromium) in Armbian (any of the MESA/VPU marked releases) that I am getting from the FriendlyElec distributions. In my naive mind, I thought the MESA/VPU version would get me there, but mpv stutters on 4K videos. I suspect this is because Armbian avoids the proprietary drives. Hello!! I just got my Orange Pi 5 the other day and am trying to 'port' a program I've been working on for RPi4b over to this new board. Let's make a topic dedicated to the latest issues with the latest Linux Release Candidate provided on the Linus Torvalds git repository. So, on the 4.13.0-rc6, I got a crash on boot on my MiQi devices due to some changes in the logging functions used by the STMMAC Ethernet driver. I reverted some of their changes by just commenting the new logging function. I'll try to get in touch with the person who wrote the commit that generated this issue, as he tends to roam in the #linux-rockchip IRC channel. Meanwhile, here's the patch : https://github.com/Miouyouyou/RockMyy/blob/master/patches/kernel/v4.13/0012-net-stmmac-Reverting-a-part-of-Use-…

Hello Forum, i just got my new tinker board running with armbian, thanks for the good work ! I want to set up a vdr vnsi server on this to replace the existing Raspberry 2. To get the DVB USB Skystar Tuners running several modules out of kernel/drivers/media like dvb-core and usb are needed. Are this kernel drivers already compiled available or what to do to get them ? Thanks Thomas

I was trying to enable i2c on my RockPro64, and when looking at the documentation in the overlay directory, it states this: rockchip (Rockchip) ### Provided overlays: - i2c7, i2c8, pcie-gen2, spi-spidev, uart4, w1-gpio ### Overlay details: ### i2c7 Activates TWI/I2C bus 7 I2C7 pins (SCL, SDA): GPIO2-B0, GPIO2-A7 GPIO1-C5, GPIO1-C4 ### i2c8 Activates TWI/I2C bus 8 I2C8 pins (SCL, SDA): GPIO1-C5, GPIO1-C4 Note that the "GPIO1-C5, GPIO1-C4" from i2c8 is accidentally included on the i2c7 pins line. I would submit a PR for this change, but ... I'm not sure where this document actually lives, and it's not easy to figure out. …

I'm adding this here as I want to contribute to the community, but I'm still not sure how. I've been playing with Armbian Build lately and found it's great for quick build images for testing purposes before it's officially made available. So I started build my own images with i3, mate, kde, and I noticed that, in my personal taste, the one that was better suited for my needs was Sway, but there's no desktop image with it. So I built a Server version and start installing it. I know it may not be of interest of everybody, so I was planning to do it for myself, so I can continue building with the interface, but having Sway "automatically" installed. …

I have an extra CB2 laying around and want to set it up with Home Assistant. However, I think I have tried all the google search and am not able to find the answer. Thus I am wondering if CB2 would be supported by Armbian community? I am currently on BTT V3.0.0 Beta 2, and got crashed (no boot) after I tried to install the docker, so I guess the BTT CB2 V3.0.0 does not fully supoort other program except Mainsail for 3D printing.

Hi! I'm using Tinker board with armbian 5.31 stable (Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS 4.4.73-rockchip), and using this as File Server. Cause i've install lighttpd and php7-0-fpm, and install Nextcloud (Owncloud). HTTPS is installed using Let's encrypt certification. Network is directly connected broadband, Half-Giga network. It looks working smoothly but little slow. BUT it's not. it's stuck on every file downloading. It's occurred both HTTPS and HTTP. First, HTTPS file downloading is stopped unexpectedly, cause can't download any files. HTTP is same but automatically resume, cause download is can be completed. …
