  1. Orange Pi 5 · Started by OttawaHacker,

I found this amazing page https://linux-sunxi.org/Sunxi-Cedrus#VLC that explains alot on VLC and hardware accelleration but I cannot clearly figure out if my playback is using hardware acceleration. I did follow all the steps to optimize chromium with the ppu sources - chromium doesn't work well yet for me - so not sure if that install worked as expected. My playback of h264 in VLC is super smooth but I have around 20-35% cpu usage (1080p videos) - I know h264 is more demanding than AV1 but someone reported AV1 with 15% CPU usage and 4k. Is there anything I can do to make sure the hardware acceleration is working (aka the VA-API is used)?

  2. Any guidance on getting the native 2-pin fan connector and control working with Armbian Jammy? e.g. using pwm-fan driver to control the fan. Thanks for any help, please be kind, I'm a newbie 🙂

  3. I have an Orange Pi 5 running Armbian Noble and I need a distribution that supports USB OTG in peripheral mode and supports dcw3_generic kernel module. I've tried to compile one with support, but I keep getting: modprobe: FATAL: Module dwc3_generic not found in directory /lib/modules/6.1.115-vendor-rk35xx I triple checked .config and the appropriate flags are set to Y. I am trying to get the Pi to act as a mouse attached to another machine's USB port. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  4. Hi, I created a Tinkerboard OMV 4 image some while ago, we uploaded it untested (since 'OMV' just means Armbian's build system doing its job with a massive post processing script adding tons of stuff) but now got the report it doesn't boot. That's a bit surprising given that the image has been downloaded over a hundred times and no one complained so far. Deleting the image is the logical consequence but maybe someone here with a serial console can give it a try and report whether the board comes up or where it gets stuck at booting. http://kaiser-edv.de/tmp/jk4NM5/OMV_4_Tinkerboard.img.xz (with mainline kernel) or the default kernel variant from he…

  5. Armbian 21.08.1 Bullseye with Linux 5.10.60-rockchip64 power supply OK, sdcard OK, installed OMV. For this reason ,https://forum.armbian.com/topic/20237-renegade-aka-roc-rk3328-cc-usb30-not-work-properly/ , I 'freeze' armbian kernal upgrades to make USB-disk work properly. But, Either poweroff in CLI or in OMV panal, it always reboot.

  6. I have some problem starting Linux image with my OPi 5+. I just got an OPi 5+ 16Gb RAM no eMMC. I flashed official Android image into SD card with SDDiskTool following the instruction in wiki. It worked. Then I do the "Data Reset" in Android Settings. The board doesn't boot anymore. I re-flashed Android into the SD, and it worked again. Then, I want to try Linux. I flashed Joshua Riek ubuntu-22.04.3-preinstalled-desktop-arm64-orangepi-5-plus.img.xz into the same SD with balenaEtcher. It doesn't boot. I tried again with Armbian_24.2.1_Orangepi5_jammy_legacy_5.10.160_gnome-amazingfated_desktop.img.xz and official Ubuntu image as well. None of them ma…

  7. hello guys, i ve been lately working with nanopi-r5s which comes with a default openwrt os installed on EMMC. but i prefer working on the armbian images. that is why i installed debian 12 bookworm from https://www.armbian.com/nanopi-r5s/ anyway, r5s refuses to boot from sd card for no matter what. until i corrupted the emmc by mistake(i started flashing a default image to emmc but then took the power off before it is done). so now it boots from sd card. but now when m trying to install the image from sd card to emmc through armbian-install. it only shows option 5 and 6. as if it can not detect the emmc. so what m trying to figure o…

  8. Hi, I'm trying to upgrade my armbian from 5.73 to 5.75 but without succes. I've checked in armbian-config if the updates are not frozen which is not the case. I tried : - sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade - sudo apt update - armbian config -> system - > firmware (update) I did accidentally installed Full firmware package but reverted to mini. kernel version should be ok : ARMBIAN 5.73 stable Debian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch) 4.19.20-rockchip And I'm not sure what else I can do to upgrade to 5.75... 9. I am running armbian buster Armbian_5.91_Rockpro64_Debian_buster_default_4.4.184_desktop.img. I need rt_preempt in order to run linuxcnc. I started with the 5.0.21.tar.gz kernel source from <https://mirrors.edge.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v5.x/> and the rt_preempt patch 5.0.21-rt16.patch.gz from <https://mirrors.edge.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v5.x/>. I applied the patch to the kernel source and compiled it on a 4gb RockPro64. It boots fine into a remote terminal using ssh but there is no display on my HDMI monitor. The white LED is showing but the red LED is not lit. I had an earlier version of linux-5.0-rt running on armbian stretch so …

  10. Are there any USB WiFi adapters that are supported out of the box? Nothing fancy, just looking for a cheap readily available USB WiFi adapter that doesn't require finding kernel headers and downloading modules to compile that will then be wiped out by the next release. I am currently using Armbian_23.02.0-trunk.0220_Orangepi5_jammy_legacy_5.10.110_xfce_desktop.img installed and booting from a 256GB NVME drive. Ethernet is an option but I'd like to make it more portable. What have you guys used and had success with? My network is WiFi 6+ but not having the best speed is just fine. Thanks in advance.

  11. Hello, The issue I describe below begins with a simple 1GB/s speed test with iperf3 (using tcp, then udp). With tcp everything is almost ok. With udp it's an other story. I first try through Internet and notice that there is connection drops. The network topology is : test computer => internet => router => switch (Mikrotik crs-326) => Rockpro64 The iperf3 server is on Rockpro64, and the client is on test computer. I then try to narrow down : - I connect directly to the switch and try again : in and out switch ports show near max speed (~1 Gbps), however the iperf3 server logs show 2 or 3 transfers at reduced speed, then show no tran…

Try to use the Putty with COM port but there's no COM port available, neither I can get any IP address so that I would access it trough Putty or locally trough LAN localhost:8123 I would be glad if someone can point me to the author of the image, I try to look on GitHub but couldn't find any Repository. 15. Hi there, can anyone give me an URL that i can download an Armbian Stretch Release for the Tinkerboard S? I´ve Problems with my RPI-RF-MOD and i´m thinking it is something with the new Releases. Thx.

  16. So recently I flashed Orange Pi OS to SD card, booted from there, updated system, firmware and flashed bootloader to SPI flash. I already had an external HDD with Armbian flashed, and tried to boot from there, but no luck. Afterwards, I tried to boot Armbian from SD card, but I can't boot any system that is not Orange Pi OS (and especifically, it needs to be from SD card, can't also boot from USB even in OPi OS). Tried with different SD cards and USB devices, no luck I believe I need to erase SPI flash in order to boot from SD again, but, how can I do it? Used latest OrangePi OS and Armbian Jammy CLI from 23/01 (stable release)

  17. Orange Pi 5 plus. It seems that in the 'edge' kernels, ssh is disabled by default. Since HDMI doesn't function this is a problem. I used the debugging UART and after setup I got the message "ssh.service is disabled" I enabled the service and all is well. Any reason why ssh would be disabled?

  18. After installing official Armbian_25.2.1_Orangepi5-plus_bookworm_vendor_6.1.99_xfce_desktop.img to sdcard, then to nvme all is fine, until, I do an apt update & upgrade, after that point chromium fails to run. I explored the logs to see it a failure to load chromium.conf from /etc/chromium.d/chromium.config (failed symbolic link to /etc/armbian/chromium.config). Is there a known workaround besides utilization of firefox?

  19. Hi. I need hardware OpenGL ES, at least 2.0. I’ve tried this https://github.com/rockchip-linux/libmali It works OK on latest Asus OS 2.0.1, but for Armbian 5.33 kernel 4.4.88 it doesn’t: ERROR: The DDK is not compatible with any of the Mali GPUs on the system. The DDK was built for 0x750 r0p0 status range [1..1], but none of the GPUs matched: Segmentation fault I don’t have much experience with Linux, but IMO it might mean the kernel + userland parts of the GPU driver are incompatible. Is there a working GPU driver for Mali-T76x on Armbian? Thanks in advance! Regards, Kosta.

  20. Hello, I am using the lastest stable mainline kernel and would like to change my mac address before network-manager is started. I tried to change the mac address of wlan1 (which is an Edimax usb wifi stick) which works, but wlan0 (Tinkerboard internal wifi chip) gives me the message: Network driver didn't actually change to the new MAC!! Does it have something to do with the drivers used on Armbian? I am using sudo macchanger --mac 02:02:03:04:05:06 wlan0 Thanks for help.

  21. Hi, I've had my 5+ for a week now and tinker with it when I can. Some things I've noticed... Using Amrbian legacy 5.10 legacy.... the system draws about 2.2w idle using a USB meter and no peripherals attached. When using the trying the latest 24.2.0-trunk.79, the power draw increases to 3w idle. I also noted the LED flickers between green and red rather than blue and red with legacy. My guess is more peripherals are being enabled. When using legacy, the first time i run an apt-get update there are 39 'gets'. When I then added a launchpad ppa and run again I only get 6. Not sure why that is. I cannot get…

  23. Hi. I have Rock Pi S0 boards that I install in an enclosure. It works, but it is conceivable that some critical bug or change with the image is discovered in the future so that customers later need to flash a new image to the emmc. But for them to do this, they would have to open the enclosure and locate the maskrom button, very inconvenient. Is there a way to trigger rebooting into maskrom from software instead of pushing the button? Apparently this is possible on the official radxa OS image by running command "reboot loader" instead of just "reboot", but not on armbian it seems. After investigating I see linux patches made by the rockchip team for kernel modu…

  24. Yeah so just like the title says, has anyone got a tip for a USB Bluetooth dongle that works with the mainline kernel? I got a UGREEN Bluetooth 5.0 dongle a while ago and have just tried again, installing firmware for it. It does get detected as a USB device and the firmware loads. But bluetoothctl never finds it. Gnome doesn't let me 'enable' bluetooth. I'd like to avoid buying a string of these so was just wondering if any are working with mainline? Cheers!

  25. Looks like the current-rockchip64 kernel that one receives with apt on PINE64 rockpro64 is 3.18.10 (6.18.10-current-rockchip64), vulnerable to copy-fail. This seems weird because if you go to https://armbian.com/boards/rockpro64 that page says that the "current" kernel for these systems is 6.18.26 and that is what you get when you download the image file. Is there an issue with updating the apt repos?

  26. Hello everyone, I've begun working to target the Armbian Legacy Tinker Board build to the Rockchip kernel. There are a list of reasons why it needs done, including some relatively large differences between the current kernel's code base and the Rockchip kernel (making it hard to patch with bugfixes/etc) and inactivity on the part of the vendor of that kernel. There are also reasons I am preferring to use the Rockchip kernel rather than the ASUS kernel. First and formost is the need to also support the MiQi. The miniarm branch of Rockchip and the ASUS kernel have board-specific fixes written in such a way as to not be friendly to other boards. I've dec…

  27. Thank you all for this series of notes. I have been operating Armbian 22.08 successfully using the sd card on my PBP and like it BUT I would like to boot from emm. I have tried dozens of ways to install it to no avail. Seems to be associated with the rootdev=UUID=... If I use the UUID provided in the Armbian-install then I can boot from emm but it ends up mounting and running from the SD partition. Is there any code that can be inserted into the /boot/armbianEnv.txt file that would provide better diagnostics? To me it appears as if the emm partitions UUID is not available at boot time. Thanks, Carl

  30. I prepared (last weekend? - don't remember anymore) a first step towards a merge of rk3399 (currently nanopi boards) with rockchip64 (more or less all the rest) so that both can be covered fully under one boardfamily (rockchip64). Patches are adjusted and dts support for nanopis in ayufans kernel is done as well. https://github.com/chwe17/build/tree/rk3399merge I would happily give it into 'someone others' hands cause time in the next month might be really rare. Basically it needs testing on the boards which got newly merged into rockchip64 (don't own any nanopi *4 board so I can't test it). And probably a small helper script to adjust …

  33. Is there any trick to make use of the integrated fan on Radxa 25W PoE Hat? I'm using 4GB Radxa Rock 5C Lite Armbian_25.5.1_Rock-5c_bookworm_vendor_6.1.115_minimal Some guides mention that one should enable an overlay. I didn't find any relevant overlays in armbian-config. I've compiled it and enabled it, but by default the fan is not spinning (on high temps) and I'm not sure how to investigate that. Also, does it matter that I have 5C Lite? 38. Hello, I'm the owner of a Khadas Edge2, and I'm trying to run it with a USB-C DisplayPort (plus touch, plus Power) screen. That combination has historically failed for me, especially with newer kernel versions. There's an old thread in the Khadas user forum https://forum.khadas.com/t/usb-c-dp-stopped-working-after-apt-update/21788 describing the problem, but it went stale and unfixed. I'm not a kernel developer, so I can't fix something like that myself. However, I recently ran an investigation with an agent that, although lengthy, appears to have produced a good fix. It's all in here, the documentation and the result: https://codeberg.org/graphic…

  44. Hi, I've been running Armbian legacy server on my 5+ for a month now. 53. I have tried to get the CSI port working on my Radxa Zero 3W with the GEEKOM X1301 HAT, and now I can get the chip to show up in /dev, however there seems to be an issue when I try to access it, as I keep getting ioctl errors. I started by copying over the .dtbo files from the regular radxa official image, and putting them into the overlay-user folder in /boot. Then I enabled the radxa-zero3-tc358743.dtbo overlay, which gets the devices to show up. I am following this guide from GEEKOM https://wiki.geekworm.com/X1300_Software, however, I keep getting ioctl errors when trying to set the EDID file on the Radxa Zero. On the Raspberry Pi, this was not an issu…

After that, acceleration will work with wayland. X11 and wayland acceleration works the same way on Debian Sid (the images are the same as Ubuntu). 61. Hi, The RK3588 supports frequencies as low as 408MHz, but in armbian the minimum is 1008MHz, which makes the cpu run hotter and draw more power even when idle, compared with the OPI ubuntu version. I am not sure if my NVMe install is good or not, and I can't currently reflash it. So I think my best bet is to wipe the SPI, which I hope means the board will go back to booting from SDCard. That's question 1 - is that actually a valid solution? If I wipe the SPI will I be able to again boot to SDCard? I am able to get the board into Maskrom mode, and I can see it using the Windows tool. 97. Hi everyone! I have recently bought an Orange Pi 5 Plus (16 GB RAM) and installed Armbian (the Pi Plus version). Then I enabled GPU hardware acceleration, as suggested on the Armbian download page, which then updated chromium and other things to the rkmpp versions. Now, if I start chromium under Wayland (tried Sway, Gnome, and KDE), the hardware acceleration works nicely, so I get good FPS on e.g. WebGL aquarium, and similar things. However, the antialiasing of some items on the screen does not seem to be working. Antialiasing in WebGL seems off as well. You can see an example in the attached screenshot. 100. Hello everybody. I own a Orange Pi 5 Plus with Debian and 3 partitions: boot, root and storage (fat, ext4, ext4). Now I want to try Armbian but I don't want to overwrite the storage partition, so I shoudn't use dd to write the .img file. Ant tip to solve this situation? Thanks.
